  1. Ive got a Blu-ray rip that I tried to play from usb but the only audio available was the directors commentary.

Quick google and it seems that the audio codec isn’t supported by LG’s media player, so I loaded it into avidemux and tried changing the compression to PCM and lo and behold it worked, Im now able to select between the normal audio and the directors commentary.

Just wondering if PCM is the correct choice or if I should be using a different compression if this happens again on other movies?

pcm isn't the best choice for TV audio; it produces huge files and is unneccessary.
Use AAC (192 kb/s) or AC3 (256 kb/s) instead. The bitrates are for stereo output.

You can use clever FFmpeg-GUI to convert the audiostream only and remux the new audiostream with the videostream.

  3. What kind of LG media player?
AC3 and AAC are covered by various licenses and royalties so they may be supported in limited way.
Check codec used by "directors commentary".

  4. Ok so I’ve just checked the codecs and the directors commentary is AC3 and the one that isn’t supported is DTS. I’ll use AC3 then for any other ones that I have problems with. The media player is just the one that comes with LG tv’s.

DTS is rarely supported on equipment other than amplifiers. If AC3 is supported then go for it.

  6. Use AAC (128 kb/s), and clever FFmpeg-GUI to convert it.
