these machines have a pioneer -107-XA drive in them. Has anyone had any experience of using any other DVD drives in these machines?
the problem seems to be a non-standard 2 pin ? audio plug on the XA drives ( not on standard drives)
All suggestions gratefully received

A DVR-107 would seem to be the answer.
I transplanted the circuit board from the dud drive to a newish 107 drive, changed the faceplates, popped it in and it works!
the HD was upgraded to 300Gb , following the instriuctions on the board, and all iis OK

ndprobinson - I replaced the 106XA in my 210 with a standard 107 drive - used the service remote and disc and it works just fine. I left the Digital Audio connector disconnected (I was told that I didn't need it - may be for play back only?)

I just received the DVR and this is what I see. TEAC DV-W58DP April 2004 part number 19771350-12.
I compare the cases and they look exactly the same. I opened the case and it also looks exactly the same.
I've already replaced the DVD-burner DVR-107-XA with a DVR-107-PB (macintosh model) of course I did the Circuit board swap out. The DVR-520h didn't notice the swap, everything worked except for the finalization of discs (new stock verbatim 8x dvr-r) my old drive was doing the samething. So I'm guessing the used macintosh drive optics/laser was just as used/old as the one I'm replacing. The verbatim discs could also be the problem, I've ordered TY's 8x and will test the DVR-520h with them. If the DVR-520h functions normally with TY's I'll leave the drive replacement alone and save the drives for down the road.
I'm going to wait until I get the TY's before I do any further dismantling/replaceing/swapping out of drive units and circuitboards.
I have found that the Pioneer DVD burners ( DVR-107-XA ) commonly used in models 420h and 520h can easily be replaced with the Teac DV-W58DP model without needing the service disc by simply swapping the main boards of the DVD burners.
The main circuit board to the Pioneer drive needs to be removed, and placed onto the new Teac drive. See pictures below;
Last step is reassembly and test.
Here are the pictures of the Teac drive i received advertised as a DVR-107 pioneer.

STOP HERE IF YOU ARE ONLY REPLACING THE CIRCUITBOARD, (i.e. you bought a new TEAC replacement)

DO NOT CONTINUE FURTHER IF YOUR INTENTIONS ARE ONLY TO SWAP OUT THE CIRCUITBOARD
Here is my step by step in how to strip the dvd drive down to the optic/laser.
remove the four screws securing the protective plate in place
protective plate removed
turn the drive over and remove the 4 ribbons connected to circuit board.
remove the circuit board and the optic/laser is exposed (picture quality sucks)
Turn the unit over again (really bad picture)
Use the disc tray emergency release latch (its a white lever on the front of the unit) extend the disc tray, pull the tray unitl the tray stops.
You can see the two rails that the optic/laser slide on now.
Now remove the 3 screws, they might be tough to get out because they used lock-tite on the screws.
Gently ease the optic/laser assembly out, one of the rails will most likely come off (no biggy).
Now do the same on the other drive.
Swap out the bad optic/laser from the 520H DVR drive and replace it with the good one. Sorry for the bad pictures.
I have found reassembling the unit is the hardest part. Setting the screws to the correct torque is nearly impossible. I don't recommend playing with the laser assembly at all.Last edited by psymaster; 12th Feb 2012 at 08:32.

Okay, I finally did it. I felt confident enough to go ahead with the swap out of the old drive and replace it with the Teac (after I bought a Service remote off ebay).
I replaced the Teac's circuitboard with the original drives circuitboard.
Installed the Teac into the 520h.
The DVR-520h works with the Teac flawlessly. It finalizes disc without any problems. I didn't have to use the service disc or the service remote (I'll save those for the HD upgrade).
I'm going to see if my source has more Teac drives now.
Cheers!IBUYPOWER I7 16GB, Ebuntu 16 system, Pioneer DVR-520H, Pioneer DVR-225, Phillips DVR-3567H, Teac replacement drives for DVR-107xa -
