  1. Hoping someone has an explanation or fix for this.

I have been ripping dvd to SVCD for over a year now and really have no problems in that issue.

Recently I built a computer to dedicate to this process and have ammassed a large amount of complete svcds that i needed to burn (bin cue).

The problem I had was this computer had no burner and I got sick of transferring the files over the lan.

So, getting to the point, I got a plextor 40x USB 2.0 burner to use on this computer.

After burning 4 of the movies I decided to check one of them out while I was wating for others to burn.

To my dissapointment the movie was horribly jerky and had pixelation every few frames. Totally unwatchable. I though, hmm, maybe a bad burn. So, I tried another movie I just burned. Same thing! In fact all 4 were VERY unwatchable. I'm watching these on a Pioneer dvd standalone which has played all my other movies with no problem.

I couldn't believe it so I went back to the computer and tried using nero instead of cdrwin. same thing! i tried converting the bin back to mpeg with vcdgear and burning the mpeg, NO, didn't help!

I tried lowering the burning speed, I tried 3 brands of media. Nothing helped!

And before you ask, yes I watched the finished svcd on the computer in WinDVD and it played fine.

So what is going on here? Is it a USB 2.0 issue? I can't imagine it since I believe USB 2.0 is faster than IDE. In any case, it shouldn't be an issue.

I then tried burning some mp3s to an audio cd and playing them back on standalone. They played fine, didn't skip or anything.

Can anyone tell me what's at fault here?
I'm really bummed and don't want to waste any more cds. About 20 are in the trash right now.

Have you tried CDRDAO (Burnatonce)? Not sure if it supports USB connected burners, but worth a try...

well it looks like you've done a decent job of isolating that as the only variable...

  4. CDRDAO does not support external drives (e.g., USB).

Do you still have the other burner across the LAN?

Try burning it on that... If it looks okay, you know where the problem lies...

It may not have anything to do with USB connection itself. It may just be an idiosyncratic and unpredictable incompatibility between your burner +/- software +/- discs +/- player.

    Best of luck.
