In one thread (I can't find it), the problem of Panasonic DMR destroying black and white was discussed.
It is right and at the same time it is not.
The HDMI output from the Panasonic is definitely in limited and probably in RGB (to be checked). But the actual range goes slightly beyond the 16-235 ranges.
This is what it looks like if we capture the video in limited range.
But all we need to do is force the full range in the capturing device and the graph will look like this.
(I should change the waveform to studio range, it would be more visible)

The limited looks ok (luma 16....~235) for distribution. No obvious clipping IMO. Perhaps you may just reduce the brights a little to be on the safe side.
The full looks a bit dull/washed out to me (luma 32... ~218) and doesn't really solve any darks/brights issues (if exist at all). Especially the black level is too high IMO. The black side bars are at Y=32 instead of 16. Maybe ok for further editing though.
(You may want to try an S-video lossless YUV 4:2:2 capture as an alternative to HDMI and post the .avi).Last edited by Sharc; 6th May 2024 at 17:02.

Your waveform is already made from an image with the range cut off, so it won't show anything.
I don't trust USB capture devices I recently tested the UGREEN HDMI grabber and it lost frames (but MJPEG 70mbit gave a decent image, nothing special, requires processing, but decent). -

The Panasonics output 8 Bits per channel 4:2:2 YCbCr via HDMI, not RGB.
