  3. If you have a stereo signal it can be played in surround sound mode providing you have a dolby prologic amp. So VCD's can be played in surround sound. This is not however the same as dolby digital 5.1 which has 6 discreet channels.

  5. You can have surround sound on a VCD, it does'nt have to be a DVD. You still only have 2 channels buy the dolby pro-logic amp does some signal processing to split the signal and send it to the 5 speakers. Like I say this is not the same as dolby digital 5.1 which has 6 seperate channels, but it still sounds pretty good and gives you a surround sound effect.

  7. What do you want to be able to do, play a disc on your stand alone DVD player, and watch it on your TV. If so you need to create either a VCD or SVCD, which means encoding the file to mpeg and then authoring and burning as a VCD/SVCD. Good software for this is TMPGEnc for encoding and Nero for burning. As long as the original AVI has stereo sound and you feed the output of your DVD player into a prologic amp you will get surround sound. For more details on how to use this software check the how to guides on this site.
