I am trying to save the sound from a .avi that has 5 channel sound into a .wav with 5 channel sound using Virtual Dub. But when i try to save the wav it comes up with this error:
The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling and channel count of the input match those of the requested format.
If there is another program that i could use please tell me that also.
Thanks

Use Vdub, but set the audio to direct stream copy. That way you will have the audio exactly as it was in the .avi. (sounds like ac3) You can then convert to whatever format you want using whatever suitable tools you can find!

vdub - audio - direct stream copy.
save as wav.
use 'headac3he' to convert to REAL .wav (you'll probably have to rename the file as blah.ac3 for headac3he to read it)
encode the video then the audio, then mux.
if it's out of sync (unlikely) then use tmpegenc to find the offset, then rencode the audio in headac3he and use the 'source file - delay' to fix the out of sync.
need more help? post more details on what you're doing ...
