MP4 HD video file not buffering well on PC or MAC-why? (H264 Main 4.0)

I rendered out a two-hour MP4 file H264, Main 4.0, and it rendered OK but when I play it back it does not "seek" very well.
ie.: When its playing, I click down the timeline an hour in front and the picture freezes but the audio is still playing, like its got a buffering issue. I rendered it out three times, same issue.
Is it because its H264 Main Level 4.0, orw hat? I have the same issue on MAC quicktime player and Windows Media Player.

Some media players are better at seeking than others. With mp4, I believe it's keyframes that are the seek points. I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will step in and provide better information.

Also, regardless of the OS and player used, the actual computer hardware can have a big impact.

I've found Avidemux to be very good at navigating the timeline for these kinds of videos

Yes, in mp4 there are two kind of seek points. One kind for IDR frames and one for open gop keyframes. Not all muxers and demuxers (read: players) handle them correctly. First thing you wanna do in these kind of situations is to disable open gop when encoding. Then try a different/up-to-date muxer and demuxer/player.

Thanks, I've got Premiere Pro Cs3 and there seems to be no options for gop keys etc.
