I have been searching for a laptop capture device (USB/Firewire) with TBC function that I can use to capture losseless and I found out that they don't exist in a format other than a lossy DV which I already have one.
So I had to go a pro way, looking for an SDI capture device, The problem is my laptop doesn't have an SDI input port, So looked online and found a solution, I bought a Magewell USB SDI adapter to use with my laptop, Although it was listed as defective but upon testing it worked fine ($250 saving), My question is are there any analog video capture devices with built in TBC that output to SDI like BrightEye 75 (which is almost impossible to find) ?
SDI is a digital A/V connection, not a data connection. Other analog A/V in to digital A/V SDI out devices exist. The Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Analog to SDI is one. However they are A/V converters, not capture devices. They don't have built-in TBCs as far as I can tell. Time base correction has to be performed before the analog signal reaches the analog to SDI converter.Originally Posted by dellsam34

dellsam34 will need another device to generate the reference signal. It looks like the BightEye 75 requires the same.
No, the ADVC G1 is self contained - there's an internal ref signal as well as an external ref. input, so it should do what dellsam34 needs as a standalone.
Page 2 of the pdf you linked to mentions that there is no need to buy any other 'expensive equipment'

What the Data Sheet I linked to actually says is: "It features a Reference In port which can serve as a frame synchronizer for analog inputs, eliminating the need to purchase separate expensive equipment."
I thought that statement meant there was no need to buy a separate frame synchronizer if a reference signal was provided.
..but you are correct that if I had not taken what I read on the Data Sheet at face value, and had read the manual as well, I would have seen a better explanation: "V REF Sync can be enabled/disabled with DIP SW3. When disabled, or when there is no signal input, the ADVC G1 automatically turns into Internal Sync mode."
The data sheet comment you mentioned seemed a bit ambiguous, so I thought it best to check with the owners manual.
As I say, I think the unit should do what the OP needs as a standalone......
Hopefully. It is hard to say if the frame synchronizer will be good enough. Unless someone has already tried the the ADVC G1 with a VHS source there is no way to tell. The built-in frame synchronizers on specific Panasonic DVD recorders are very effective, but the built-in frame synchronizers for other models are less so.
Yes I find the frame synchroniser/ time base corrector in my Panasonic DVD recorder very effective. It's fascinating to read varying 'expert' opinions here on the board about what it actually is in those Panasonic units... but it works well!
The only Grass Valley unit I have is an ADVC50, which includes the abililty to defeat Macrovison, so that must have some sort of TBC as well. That works fine.
I see from the block diagram I attached earlier that one of the blocks for the ADVC G1 is described as a 'frame memory'. So it may include a full frame TBC?...
As you say, how well it works remains to be confirmed. Grass Valley (Canopus) have a pretty good reputation for producing quality items...

I will be getting a used Blackmagic Design Analog to SDI converter to use with the Magewell SDI to USB 3.0 dongle, It has Procamp but no TBC or frame sync, The ADC chip does 12bit 4:2:2 according to the spec. I will set it up with my S-VHS built in TBC deck and do some captures and see how it goes, I hope one day I get my hands on a BrightEye 75 or the ADVC G1.
