  1. I need to find a DVD or Blu-Ray Player that reads .srt files and has a USB port. I don't know how to find this on my own, because it doesn't seem a concern of most people, so manuals don't mention this, nor do any reviews I found.

Can anyone recommend one? Price is not an issue, but obviously the lower the better. Also, is there anyway I can easily find out if a DVD player reads .srt files?

    Thanks!

I suggest to get a HTPC. You can view any format, it has a USB port and you can read srt files!

  3. I'm not sure what that is. I googled it, but it seems kind of complicated.
It's not for me, but for my parents, who can't work overly complicated stuff. Can you recommend any specific one?

It might help to know which country your parents reside in if you need a specific model recommended. Models vary by country. The manual (usually available for download form the manufacturer) will tell you about what file formats can be used for subtitles.

I suggest looking at LG Blu-Ray players. The LG Blu-Ray player that I bought for my parents a couple of years ago can use SRT subs on a USB flash drive with limitations.

I have to be honest that my parents, who were in their 80s when I bought the Blu-Ray player, never really learned to use it as a media player or disc player. They don't really understand the underlying concepts of using menu-driven interfaces. They had no trouble with the DVD player because they could simply pop in a DVD and hit "Play".

  5. After you mentioned the manual I decided to check out the manual for the LG BP540, which is one someone else recommended to me. Turns out it accepts a bunch of extensions and has a USB port, which is exactly what they need. So thanks for the help!
