  1. Hey all,

I have a ton of MP4 files that I'd like to convert over to MKV. After searching a bit, I only see posts of people wanting to go from MKV to MP4, for some reason.

I'd prefer all my video files as H264 MKV since MP4 files tend to lag and stutter when trying to stream from my PC to my WD TV Streaming set top box. MKV files play flawlessly.

Is there an easy, one click solution to get these files into MKV format, while keeping file size and quality constant? I've tried re-encoding with Handbrake, but either the file size blows up, or the quality degrades, or both. I'm getting a little tired of messing around with quality settings in Handbrake.

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear, thanks!

There is nothing to be gained at all by converting MKV to MP4 except some Apple based playback devices demand it. That's the only reason I can think of for doing it, but it wouldn't surprise me if some people actually think MP4 is somehow "better". Note that MP4 containers do have restrictions on what they can hold whereas MKV can basically hold anything.

There actually is a fairly easy way to get your MP4 files into MKV containers. Install MKVToolnix and use the mmg program that comes with it. Just open your MP4 files in it and send them to MKV output. It's not exactly one click, but it's not many clicks and it's easy to use. Requires no re-encoding either. Just puts your MP4 contents into an MKV container.
