Hi,
I use makmkv to rip my BD. I used to use handbrake to video compress them and remux them with the original soundtracks and subtitles.
I recently discovered xmedia recode which allow to "copy" the audio and the subs. It allows me the remux operation.
There are lots of profiles and when I use the mkv one, I am not capable to obtain a descent results in term of quality. Can someone have any experience and share with his parameters ?
Thanks

Under format be sure to choose
Video codec: avc/h264
Under video choose
Profile: High
Level:4.1
Preset:Slow
Bitrate: Constant quality
Quality:20 (increase it for smaller size or use 2-pass encoding with a fixed bitrate) -
Oups, one more question. For 2-pass encoding what value of bitrate give good results ?

What exactly does 20 in "quality" settings stand for?
I`m trying to shrink a BD disc ripped with MakeMKV but the recoded videofile is almost as large as the original source?
My original source file was 13GB and the recoded one was around 10GB. Would of liked to shrink it down to 6-7GB.
I used "constant quality" and 20 for "quality".
How should i set quality if i want to shrink the video even more? -
It's basically just a number. Think of it as how much detail is removed from your video. If you want higher quality (larger files) use a lower number. If you want lower quality (smaller files) use a higher number.]
If your primary concern is file size use bitrate based encoding. You will get the size you want (size = bitrate * running time) but you don't know what the quality will be.
If your primary concern is quality use RF based encoding. You will get the quality you ask for (relative to the source -- you can't turn a low quality source into a high quality video) but you don't know what the size will be. -
for smaller files use a bigger constant quality number. it will also decrease the quality of the video.

BTW, Handbrake supports both PGS (Blu-ray subs) passthrough as well as DTS-HD MA passthrough.
MakeMKV is still the tool to use if you're looking to passthrough TrueHD and LPCM audio tracks.
A CRF of 20 should produce a nearly imperceptible reduction in quality, although many people prefer CRF values ranging from 18 to 16 for Blu-ray sources, however, they can come with a significant increase in size. As Baldrick stated, to aim for a smaller size, increase the CRF value i.e. 22/24 etc. or use 2-pass encoding with a fixed bitrate to achieve the file size you desire.
You didn't mention if you're keeping the full resolution. A 1080p rip at around 10GB sounds okay. If you're aiming for full 1080p resolution in a 6-7GB size, expect to find a reduction in PQ.What exactly is rotten in Denmark?
