Is there a way to join multiple MP3 files, for example a live recording split into multiple files, that will give seamless transitions

Audacity man, a fantastic free program that works like a charm.

Got that. tried it. does everything needed. One further question. When joining say a live show split into clips, is there a way to fine tune the join to get it truly seamless.
I used Audacity to join an album that had 10 clips. I got the joins pretty good after messing around. Just wondered if there was a simpler way to fine tune the joins.

Click the plus icon and zoom in on the point where the tracks are joined, then you can add a second or so of silence you copy and paste from another area to make it play nice. You can also highlight and delete a bit to sync up the sounds or use the fade in/fade out effects depending on how you like it to play. That usually works for me when I'm fine tuning a mix anyway.

Try find zero crossing point from the edit menu (if I'm remembering this right). Also try the audacity forums. And the manual. it's quite good.

  9. mp3DirectCut. You can open multiple instances of mp3DirectCut, each opening a different MP3, and copy and paste between them etc. I've used it to join MP3 files that way many times, and the process is lossless.

Seemless transitions may be another story..... it depends on the MP3 files in question, but mp3DirectCut can do fade ins and outs etc as well as basic editing etc.
