Hey all,
I am getting into karaoke lately. I know that you can make cd+g discs from scratch, but it's a pain going through the songs and tagging the words to hightlight at the song goes along, etc... So a while back i used a program that would let me attacht an image to show on the screen while the song played. This was cool because i could keep it simple by having the song play (karaoke version without the words) and simply having a picture on the screen. This static screen simply contained the words to the song. Granted, the words dont move or scroll, but if you know the basics of the songs, all you really need to look at is the the words).
Now, it was a while ago, like i said, so i don't remember the software. I have many burning platforms, and several burnign drives (pleextor) and even a dvd burner.... Now that is the simples way to make a disc where there is a single image that willl show on the screen for each song...
Actually, now that i mention this, i could oh wait... couldn't i use a slideshow program that sets the slides to music -- and just have the one (or a few ) slides of words show and tell the slides to last the duration of the song? Is that practical? What are some other methods? that may take up more room on the cd than the alternate method of one image pers song?
Also, i don't know of any players that support mp3+g, so i would still have to convert the karaoke mp3 files that i have into "regular" audio for these cd's. This is what i do anyway. That is, i have mp3 songs without words that i use. It would be nice to put the picture to them.... I don't expect to be able to utilize the actual mp3 data file with these cd's and still have words, so i don't mind converting them to regular audio (even though i can only fit about 12 songs per cd).
Thanks a bunch for your help, i appreciate it very much!!

Even better is to be able to download youtube karaoke videos and convert them to CDG to play on karaoke players. I've been looking for software to be able to do this. There seem to be many that allow for converting from CDG format to DVD or something of that nature to be able to burn to disc and ply on DVD but I want something that splits an MP4 or AVI video file into a mp3 and CDG so that it can be zipped and added to a karaoke
library for a karaoke program that I already have. I have a Karaoke creator that allows me to use a karaoke mp3 and then add lyrics to make a CDG but that is time consuming. I would like to just convert the mp4 songs that I have directly to CDG format. Anyone can help please? -
bojogcenik - do NOT dig up old threads to add to them. If it's more than 6 months old, just leave it alone. 9 years since the last post is sadly not a record around here, but what you did was bad enough. Just make a new post next time.
CD+G is pretty much dead. We've got a few members who know a little about it who may respond, but there are no guarantees. -
Hardware support is tiny & dwindling. If you want Picture + Music + Words, it makes much more sense to future-proof it by doing a DVD or BD with still picture+music+subs.
Yes, I have a bunch of apps in my archives that will do what you want, but I won't get them out or point them out for you unless you had a really strong reason to NOT go the way I just suggested.

If you're the administrator of this site then delete the threads that are more than 6 month old if they have no benefit. Other people may still be viewing this site and have answers for people like me. If you're not the administrator then mind your own business and post something useful such as info I requested. -
Hi Scott
Appreciate the comment. I have a karaoke program that plays CDG's. Its basically set up for professional karaoke shows. Just having the songs on DVD is fine for using at home and the key can be changed on the DVD player probably but I think that's the limit. it's not easy to search songs instantly as in the karaoke software on the computer so I still like to use that. I'm sure you know how the set up is ion a karaoke situation and how the whole thing works. With a library of over 300 000 songs it's not easy to have all that on DVD and to instantly call up a song for performance. I'm only aware that the CDG file can be opened up with other applications such as windows media but then how about key change? Anyway I just want to add up to date songs to my library that can be played on my existing Karaoke program.
By doing still picture, do you mean just a jpeg that has all the lyrics on the one page? If so, it's not practical, it's ok if you're just sitting in front of the laptop and singing the song for yourself. If you're at a party and want to have fun with karaoke then the lyrics need to be large and readable by the performers, thus the idea of the karaoke set up. The idea of the words highlighting as the songs progresses helps the performer go through the song if they don't know it that well. -

Well, I disagree about the catalogging & indexing/searching part of DVD. A database that links to DISC_TITLESET_TITLE_CHAPTER_CELL can easily be put together. But anyway...
AFA still picture, no I was talking about an actual picture like a pretty graphic or background or a photo of the artist/band. The lyrics should be using DVD subs. DVD (and BD) subs have always had the ability to do rollups & moving highlights. Just depends on the authoring app you are using. And I can tell you from experience, it is a hell of a lot easier to deal with than old CDG apps, plus a whole lot clearer (CDG fonts are notoriously clunky as you well know).
Key change...that's another matter. There is no real good solution for DVD/BD nor standard video files. Isn't even great for CDG (as there's no separate control for tempo vs. pitch). You should however look into the "Karaoke"-specific features available to DVDs (and possibly BDs), as they may address this. They certainly address the whole "live mixing" possibilities. The main problem I see there is finding players that can take advantage of those features.

Thanks man, very helpful. So you're saying that in the new format DVD/BD, the lyrics can be scrolled along the screen synchronized with the song just like in CDG? OH I get it , you mean subtitles as in a movie. There's still the issue about the file size? For a single song the file size in DVD/BD format would be large as compared to the CDG format which are compressed as ZIP for CDG players to read. If I were to start using the new DVD/BD format for my karaoke would that mean I would have to convert my whole karaoke database of songs into that format? That would be a hell of a task.

...I'm not saying it wouldn't be a task.
Filesize is directly related to bitrate (seeing as how runtime should be identical in both formats). Bitrate of video from DVD could be large (<=9.8Mbps) or small. If you use a still picture (incl. BLACK) and encode it as MPEG I-frame, you can likely have a video bitrate of ~256kbps. It could conceiveably be less than CDG bitrates, because audio could be AC-3 or MP2 @ 256kbps and subtitle @ ~24kbps, giving you a total of 256+256+24= ~540kbps (with a little overhead), whereas CDG audio is equal to CD Audio, and being LPCM is 1378kbps. That's not including the CDG graphics/subs, but those are miniscule (~512 bps?), so not much different there. Compressing CDG into Zip really only gives you a ~2:1 compression ratio, so the rate is more like 690kbps.
