  1. My friend wants me to edit her how-to videos that she would shoot but has no idea how to edit. I'm trying to look into Cloud technology but really don't know where to start and whether they would work for video files. She wants 5 minute videos so there would not be that much footage.

I just want to figure out how to do this so we don't have to keep mailing hard-drives between California and Indiana. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

You still have to transfer all the original footage from one local machine's hdd to the other (with folder structure intact).
Could do it via snailmail/sneakernet, or via ftp or cloud, but they still have to end up in a local working drive. Once the originals have been transferred the first time, the media-related difficulties can be put to rest (until other footage is required or until archive time).

Then you need to both have near-identical computer setups WRT NLE installation so there are no compatibility problems.
Then update the working EDL/Session/Project by emailing it back and forth (targeting the same local relative path).

  5. set up a remote desktop connection to the computer. there are many third party prgrams that you can use like logmein (www.logmein.com). or use the built in remote connection in windows. just a thought.

I use LMI weekly, if not daily, and though I love it, it would not be responsive enough to handle A+V editing workflow even at the best of times. Same with other remote desktop solutions.

Set up a NAS with an HTTPS connection and a free DDNS service.

Then you'll have your own private cloud. That's what a cloud is, a NAS running Apache Server. It's old tech from the 90's, re-invented as something new.

That should be enough for what the OP wants to do, I've been grandfathered in so I get 25GB.
