How to Create/Burn DVD from AVI

Ok guys i have a movie that's in 2.5gb AVI and i want to put in on a DVD disc to play in dvd players. I use AVS video converter and convert to DVD but it wants me to shrink the size all the way down. I want to keep as much quality as possible when converting. Are there any programs out there? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

If you get crappy quality from avs video converter try avstodvd.

Or get yourself a media player or dvd player with avi xvid/divx support and you just have to burn your avi files on dvdr or flash drive.

Well the original file size is 2.5gb and when i go to convert it the high quality DVD setting is 10gb, the Good quality setting is 6.9gb and the standard setting is 5.2gb and it always wants me to either shrink it to 1 disc. Why does the converting to dvd have a higher size output?

Can the OP use Freemake Video Converter to convert to ISO and then Burn to DVD with IMGBurn? IS the is a long way around this? What is a better way?

What is the running length (playback time) of the AVI?

I use ConvertXtoDVD to put files onto DVD for playback. It's very good.

your file might be h.264 encoding, which has very high compression while having high quality, BUT it is not dvd compatible
so to maintain the quality, the encoding in mpg2/vob will be much larger

you have a choice use 8gig and burn to a double layer DISC

and i would use avsTOdvd, tempgenc or convertx
to do the conversion


or get a DVD player that supports avi, xvid etc..

Run time is 2Hrs 29Min. Ok thanks guys i am going to use some of these programs and see what i can do.

Some dvd encoder/author programs don't really like longer videos. Avstodvd is good there. It's the best one I ever tried, though frankly that ain't saying much. I don't like how avstodvd installs ffdshow ... I really don't believe in 3rd party codecs/filters in windows 7 at all ... but it should work ok if your system isn't already clogged with codecs.

Your .avi may in fact be h.264 encoded but it shouldn't be. It's certainly not impossible but the avi container does not support all h.264 features. A number of encoders will let you put h.264 in an avi wrapper but this is probably a sign of incompetence.

BTW, as you may have guessed by now, the fact that the file name extension is .avi doesn't really tell you that much about the video spec.

I still recommend avstodvd even though I don't like using those 3rd party codecs/filters and it's frankly a bit hacky. But the others are worse, often much worse. I haven't burned a dvd in ages, and almost nobody I know has for ages either. If I were a software developer a dvd author would be just about the last thing I'd be interested in writing.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that after all buying all those dvdr's and spending all those hours encoding/burning them, it starts to make a lot of sense to set things up so you can just play files from the computer.

In the meantime definitely try avstodvd.

One thing, though. It uses 2 different encoders ... why, God only knows because one of them (hcenc) is much better ... in different modes depending upon the input file bit rate (proportional to file size). If you want consistently decent quality, always force 2 bit VBR encoding.

However, you will lose quality. The only way to reencode without that would be to a lossless codec, which dvd video isn't.
