I want to backup my dvd's onto my computer just incase they go bad so I still have them is there a program to do this that makes it a one step process or do I need multiple programs to do this.

If you are talking about commercially made dvd movies, then you'll need a decryption/ripping program and a conversion program. You could use DVDFab HD Decrypter to decrypt and rip the movies to the hard drive...it is the free section within DVDFab and will continue to function even after the trial for the main program ends. Convert to avi using something like AutoGK.

I'm not sure why you want to convert the dvds if you are attempting to back them up. Conversion will lose a bit of quality from the originals. You could simply save them as dvd-video instead. For that all you need is DVDFab HD Decrypter.
