    Hello,
I recently started watching video files on my television, yet sometimes it says "video codec not supported".
I kind of narrowed the problem down to this: all the mkv files have a video track that says "V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC"
The ones that are accepted have "[und]" at the end of that, the rejected ones "[eng]" or "[jpn]" or somesuch.

Could anybody tell me of a way to change the part between square brackets? Or something else that might solve it?

I guess it's something else like different h264/avc profiles/bframes/hd frame size. Post the full mkv details from mediainfo.

Or the mkv uses compressed headers(check it with mediainfo). Then remux the mkv with mkvtoolnix, first disable default compressed header under file->options, open the mkv, make a new mkv.

the things in the square brackets are the language of the file - [und]etermined, [eng]lish, [jap]anese. not anything to do with if they play or not.

Most likely this is the problem

Format settings, ReFrames : 16 frames
    Muxing mode : Header stripping
Try removing header stripping first and see if it plays you can use the latest version of MKVMergeGui for this as it has header stripping disabled by default and should only take minutes.

If the problem is too many ReFrames then you will have to re-encode at a lower figure like 8...

Format profile : High 10@L5.0,you also have to change the profile from 5.0 to 4.1 with tsmuxer and load it back into mkvmerge with head stripping unchecked.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

Just install the latest version of MKVMergeGui and do a remux - it will copy the file out with a new name albeit (1) attached this will remove header stripping without you having to untick the box which you can find anyway under the tab "extra options" (drop down menu on this tab).

This will only take a few minutes to do and is worth doing before and if you have to really re-encode. You could be lucky Otherwise as johns0 posted

The plain remux doesn't fix it unfortunately, and the tsmuxer keeps giving me an error
"Matroska parse error: invalid H264 NAL unit size. NAL unit truncated"
    And nothing happens

You could try PS3Muxer and tick the 4.1 box or maybe convert to MP4 with MKVtoMP4 ?

    Hi Baldrick,

I know you will say it's an old thread. But, MKVMerge gives "parser error in matroska file" and I can't "disable default compressed header" as you suggested.

I have many versions of MKVTools.
What version of MKVTools shall I use?

    Thanks.

Sorry to chime in but I think the latest version doesn't do compression by default, however you can ensure it doesn't by loading your file in and highlighting the video and going to extra options tab and selecting no compression. Then go back and highlight the audio track and select no compression then make the copy. done!

Thanks @netmask5 for the reply and you're welcome.

I think I chose a wrong thread. My problem is the video file plays normally under SMPlayer but not in PotPlayer Version 1.5.45955 -Beta!

But, if I want to extract audio/video by any tool or use MediaInfo, the messages I get are "Parser error in Matroska File" or "No tracks found"

There's a little problem in the video which I understand can be corrected by using MKVMerge. MKVMerge or Avidemux etc don't recognize the video as a valid file.
