    Hello,

I have captured video tapes to DVD and VCD for years.
Now, I want to capture HD videos. But I don't know which media I should store the video without losing quality. As I guess, I can't use DVD any longer.

How to capture Where to store

    Thanks,
    What are you capturing from?

Most computer tuners simply pass the compressed HD broadcast signal to a file. After editing, you can author these to Blu-ray or a DVDR for playback on a Blu-ray player. Or you can store the files on a hard disk and play them with a media player or in some cases directly from the HDTV.

You will need to provide more detail to get a more detailed answer.

    What country are you in?

What are you trying to record from?

DVD players and DVD authored discs are standard def only. You can't play HD files with a DVD player.

You can put HD files on DVDR media and play them in a Blu-ray player although the recording time is short.

I'm from Turkey. I will capture from hd tapes and hd broadcast. I will also record hd files from hdds to blu-ray disks.
So, do I need a blu-ray recorder to capture from hd tapes or to burn hd files to blu-ray?

Broadcast varies by country. While some Blu-ray recorders exist, they are very expensive and not generally available (special order). Typical HD recording is done with digital video recorders (DVR) that you obtain from your video service. Free over the air video and unencrypted cable can be captured using computer tuner cards. These tuners capture the digital broadcast stream to a file that is stored on hard disk.

HD camcorder capture varies. HDV camcorders capture over a Firewire port from the tape in the camcorder. AVCHD camcorder files can be read from flash cards or captured over USB.

Once you have the HD files on disc, you can edit them and then transfer to Blu-Ray media as files or authored with menus and chapters. Blu-ray players vary for direct file playback. Some players require a fully authored BDMV folder.

Are there DVRs with HD format? Or do they change hd format to DVD format 4:3 ?
By the way, are there any DVRs which can record in 16:9 DVD format ?

Yes and yes but you are limited to the DVRs available from your service.

Most DVRs will have digital encryption but if they have analog component out you can record HD with products like the Hauppauge HD PVR, Hauppauge Colossus, or Elgato EyeTV HD (Mac).
