How can you tell the quality of blank DVDs when buying them in a store? I want to make sure I buy high quality DVDs but I never know what to look for.
Thanks

if at all possible buy verbatim that come in these spindles
do not buy verbatims that are called Value Line. I've used Radioshack's house brand called Gigaware and they scan out good. Used them for a few years and no problems. I also use TDK -r's I get from office depot and they scan out good to. No issues. If you buy online go to supermediastore and just grab the 50 pack of + or -r 8x verbatims...they're rock solid -

The good ones say Verbatim DataLife Plus and AZO, or they say Taiyo Yuden. The others are hit and miss. Brands like Sony, TDK, etc. don't manufacture discs, they buy them from the companies that do. Sometimes they're good, sometimes not.

DON'T BUY IN STORES!
Honestly, the ONLY way to be sure you know what you are getting is to order online from rima.com, supermediastore.com, etc. Verbatim rarely sells their good discs in stores any more because the market demands cheap, low quality discs. You are just wasting your time trying to find good discs in stores. If you are too cheap to pay shipping (and honestly even with shipping ordering online is often as cheap or cheaper than buying in stores) then you really have no business looking for good media and should just buy whatever cheap crap you see in the stores that you can afford.
Verbatim's value line series is called the "Life" series. Best Buy sells them. It's low priced crap but they are no worse than anybody else's low priced crap discs. Don't confuse the Life series with Verbatim's top of the line DataLifePlus discs which you can only buy online and are excellent. -
Stick with Verbatim. They burn good and I've had zero compatibility problems.
Here's the numbers to search for:
95098 (SL +R 100 pack) <$20
95102 (SL -R 100 pack) <$20
96542 (DL 8x 30 pack) <$30
Prices fluctuate and they're running a little high right now.
If you wait & watch you can probably get the prices indicated.
I usually catch the best deals at Amazon or Newegg. -

I just saw Newegg on eBay of all places...Guess what they were selling?
-
Huh ??
I have never seen or come across Newegg on Ebay but i have seen TigerDirect, BestBuy and a few other brick and mortar stores with Ebay stores selling stuff on Ebay.
Now i am going to have to look on Ebay for Newegg
EDIT:
I was already on Ebay looking at/for different things, and i just looked up Newegg's Ebay store, and they are selling pretty much everything so a guess as to what you are referring to would be like playing the lottery!!

It's called "multiple tabs" in firefox....
I have a minimum of 5 tabs (usually 6 or more) open anytime i am sitting in front of my PC....
Mail, Vhelp, Newegg, Ebay, **** (Can't say, no it's not a pron site), Craigslist (always scanning for good deals) and maybe a couple of other random sites....
It is 2012, not 1995 when you hope your dial up modem will connect and let you load 1 site within 5 minutes..... and you get to hear that cool screeching sound!!!
LOL!!!
And actually, i thought it took a long time... as i went upstairs to get pizza and my router went bonkers for a few minutes....
But maybe the bourbon made it seem longer than it actually was

Time for a stupid question. For which applications are -R and +R better? For instance, if I'm burning a movie to DVD to watch in a stand-alone player, do I use -R or +R? Ditto burning files to a DVD for storage?
Thanks! -
