    I use both mpchc and vlc, but I'm finding the former more reliable for playing certain formats even though VLC plays some things mpchc won't. Plus I don't like the VLC full screen interface as much.

    However, VLC looks much better to me when playing sources that have a lower bit rate ... ie. less pixelated. While this may mean that mpchc is being more accurate, with some sources that's not such a great thing.

    Are there any relevant settings in mpchc that would make it look like vlc?

    I can't find much in mpchc docs. I don't mind reading documentation but I don't have much patience with sketchy stuff written by people who don't have a clue about doc standards. That's one of the reasons I like Handbrake so much.

    I was using a DVD authoring program quite a bit until I discovered the author's tech support includes telling users to manually change the Windows registry. That is extremely unprofessional, dare I say shaky. My response to seeing that was to buy a decent sized monitor and pretty much say to hell with DVD authoring programs.

    Not that I include mpchc or vlc in the sketchy doc category, especially the latter.

    Plus I'm not really a DV geek and don't really want to be. I'm more of a DA geek myself. There's a limit to how much I want to delve into video.

    But enough of that. Any ideas?

  2. Change the output device in MPCHC:

    View -> Options -> Playback -> Output...

    Also play with the resizer settings, same dialog.

    Then go to your graphics card's setup applet and adjust the video/media playback settings. Exactly how you get there and what settings are available vary depending on what graphics card and driver version you have. For example, here are some of the controls for the Intel HD 3000:

    Thanks for the replies. I've seen madvr referenced but haven't tried it. And my machine I use for video stuff does have intel hd graphics.

    Not sure I want to get into those graphics settings though, when I have 2 programs that work and don't conflict with each other.

    I find the thing with freeware/open source software is, there's a limit to how much I'll frak around with it to get it to work. If there are other programs around that work and don't cause compatibility problems I'll just try one of them. With software you pay a significant amount of $$$ for there's a lot more incentive to spend the time configuring and jiggering it.

    Those controls work at the graphics card driver level. The settings will effect all media players (except VLC when using Windows GDI output).
