Hey guys!
I have myself a Netgear dg834pn wireless router in my upstairs study and recently due to having to move the modem further into the room (beacuse of a certain pet that likes to chew wires), it has decreased the signal strength around the rest of the house. My problem is I cannot move the modem from the study as I has its own dsl line to the rest of the house and also due to the house being old stone wall this does not help matters. When the modem was in the corridor outside the study there were no issues, but now the signal in the lounge at the end of the corridor is poor and drops out very often!
Is there anything that can be done to either boost the signal strength other than buying repeaters?

We had a similar problem, you can try a boosting antenna which replaces your Wireless router's (or AP's) antenna:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004MDQQ04/ref=asc_df_B004MDQQ041777234?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&ta...SIN=B004MDQQ04
It worked pretty well, but we had much better results with an active amplified antenna:

Best results were achieved when I needed more wired connections and bout a 10 port switch:

and added a wireless 'N' (with B/G fallback) access point:

Frankly I would recommend the Access point over the amplified antennas as they also amplify interference which makes them slightly less reliable.
Hope this helps.

Can't you put it high on the wall where the animal can't get to it?
Most domestic routers have attachment points to hang vertically.
Or various reflectors to focus the signal to the part of the house you need it:

After putting up for much too long with poor signals to opposite ends of a house with three-foot field-stone walls, I finally made the best networking purchase I've ever made, the Western Digital WDTV Livewire Powerline Networking Kit With Two 4PORT Homeplug AV Adapters.
Even though I still run a 802.11n wireless network for various and sundry devices and connections, powerline networking is now ready for prime time, and this kit really is as easy as plugging in a lamp. Rock solid connection without running Cat 5 cable throughout the house.
