Wow. I haven't heard of a Macrovision removing hack for firmware in something like 8 years.

I strongly suggest that the original poster take a look at tonypeter's 2nd link as it has some warnings about the firmware hacks that he really should pay attention to. It warns that while you can get rid of Macrovision that it still won't enable the recorder to record "protected content" so don't be surprised if you can't do what you want even if you apply the hack. This is just a guess by me but maybe all the hack does is the (mostly useless) job of getting rid of Macrovision on video output from the player to the TV and it has nothing to do with input sources. The was exactly how the Macrovision hack worked years ago on the very few players that had one.

thanks, have looked at the sites posted, my dvd writer is not listed, 5045 and 5025 is but not 5006, not sure if these will work. are they for many models.

To hack the 5006 as yours which is already upgraded to firmware 0101 (based on one of your previous post) you need to find the factory original firmware version 0098 ( UK version for you, hard to find but maybe someone out there still has a copy) and backflash the 5006 to 0098.

Then you take the original firmware file 0098 and pass it through the Smart Liteon hacker program and burn that hacked file to disc, reflash the 5006 and it is now macrovision free.

The note on the site about not being able to record protected content is if you try a firmware file other than the original 0098 (like the 0101), then the hacked file will not be macrovision free, Liteon caught on and change the firmware and made it harder to find the original ones, it will though do 1 and 3 below.

The hack program does three things:
1- adds the 3-hour mode to recorders that don't already have it.
2- on the original 0098, it will change the code from Macrovision enable to disable.
3- and make it region free, as this hack was produced for North American models, the hack actually drops the region code from one (1) to zero (0) which is region free. For models outside of North America, you need to make it region free manually, go to setup, punch 2960 on the remote and that brings up the region menu and choose zero(0).


In your case the original SN: 0104-3244-0101-B20G (200-010D) would change, first with the original 0098 file, to SN: 0104-3244-0098-B20G (100-010D) from 0101 to 0098 firmware and the region code dropped by one, the first code in the bracket (2) to (1) making it a region 1 recorder for now.

Then with the hacked original will change to SN: 0104-3244-0098-B20G (110-010D), the second digit in bracket is the macrovision code (0= enable, 1=disable), then do the manual region-free process and your final SN should be: 0104-3244-0098-B20G (010-010D).

Again the challenge is finding a copy of the original 0098 firmware file for the 5006, make sure it starts with 0104 which identifies the motherboard as some Liteon recorders had different motherboards, so different firmware files.

I personnaly have flashed over 20 recorders with the smart hacker program.
The models I've hacked are (North American):

Liteon 5005
Liteon 5007
Liteon 5045
ILO R04 (dumbed down Liteon clone of the 5005)
ILO HD04 (dumbed down Liteon clone of the 5045)

P.S. Outputs are also MV free, I feed an ILO R04 via component out to a Sony RDR-HX715 and also a Philips HDRW720, both of which have component in inputs jacks.

What I was looking into was the potential the 5006 was simply a renumbered 5001
And if so, use the 5001 PAL hack found here: LiteOn (Ilo, Daytek, Gateway) DVD recorder hacks

If I remember correctly, 0098/1098 is not hackable, you'll need an earlier version.
But at the same time, many of the later firmwares prevent downgrading.

The big problem was these hacks caused jitter.
You're better off simply getting a TBC, if you're getting copy protection warnings.

That seems to mean 5001 = 5006.

tried 5001 firmwares and just get data disc on screen.

Be sure you follow the instructions for burning properly.
In the past, people would burn the zip file to a disc, etc ----- not reading.

Do a "restore" under setup first. You still need to backflash the 5006 to the original 098, then flash with the hacked 098 file. Trying to apply the hacked 098 over the 101 installed firmware will not work.
Unzip the folder and do not just copy and drag, you need to burn the firmware file, do not rename the file and no other information on the disc. I was typing at the same time you replied, I'm copying over some instructions that I found a number of years ago on how to backflash the US 5006, the info is good and transferrable to the UK model. I don't know who the author is.

I posted this on another site as well so I hope it helps here...

I had the 101 firmware installed on my 5006... got tired of not having the MV hack...(even though my 5005 still has the 098fw on it with the mv hack...) I didn't want to wear my 5005 out.

SO

I thought I would try something and I'll be dag-on IT worked like a charm and you CAN go back to the 098 firmware.....

I took the last 098 Firmware (LNFA1098.ES5) renamed it to "LNHA1102.ES5" then burned it to CDR.

The 5006 recorder recognized it and reflashed the system back to "LNFA1098.ES5"

I checked the setup to make sure it was flashed back and guess what "IT DID CHANGE IT BACK" it went back to 098....

I then applied the Ilo Hack to the "LNFA1098.ES5" firmware (and I did not have to rename it this time) and now I have the MV hack back again......I have been copying VHS movies with no problems for quite a few days now.....

I guess the system is looking for a higher number FW to install even though after the flash it says 098....

So anyone wanting to flash back you can......I hope this helps those who were stuck!!!

I don't think you need to reverse the hack. Just make a copy of the hacked firmware and rename it to your current firmware revision, and install it and that's it. It should work like charm (of course you'll be doing it at your own risk).

The link to the archive I provided earlier is messed up down the line. I even joined the pumapeople forum to try get into the final folder with the firmaware files but no luck. You may want to contact them in case the above does not work.

Another suggestion, go to CDFreaks / MYCE. There is Liteon forum there and a lot of knowledgeable people and I'm pretty sure that someone may have the original 098 UK firmware.

BTW, are you sharing an NTSC or PAL firmware? The OP is PAL UK.

LS, I was sharing the flashing steps process from a post I read some years ago, kept it as a reference.

Drewbert73, about renaming firmware files, the 5005 files all start with LNFA, the 5006 files start with LNHA, the 5007 files start with LNKA. When users say to rename, it's changing the 3rd letter in the beginning of the file name.
