  1. I was having trouble with a video editor recently and read that a certain codec would probably help. I found the codec (qmpeg.inf), did 'right click/instal' but my problem wasn't fixed. So I thought I'd uninstall the new codec but I'll be damned if I can find it. I've scoured the list obtained via Gspot but can't see it (although there's that many I may have missed it).

The qmpeg codec isn't bothering me, it's just curiosity – where are codecs found in Windows 7 and how does one go about uninstalling?

    Many thanks.

  2. In Win7, if it's a 32 bit codec it will be in C:\Windows\SysWoW64. If a 64 bit codec it will be in C:\Windows\System32. The INF file isn't the codec, just a small text file that describes how to install the codec. The real codec file is probably a DLL, ACM, or AX file.

  3. Hello (again) jagabo and thank you for that. I found qmpeg.acm where you said – it's 'creation date' was the day I installed it* so I just deleted it. I had a poke around in the registry and there's a tree as follows: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Multimedia/Components/installed/codec_qmpeg.

From that, there's a reference to C:\Windows\INF\qmpeg.inf. So I went there and found the file qmpeg.inf. D'you reckon I can safely delete it too? And the registry file?

The reason I want rid is that I've just found a number of references to qmpeg.acm being problematic. For example:
    http://www.superantispyware.com/malwarefiles/QMPEG.ACM.html

*Thanks for telling me that qmpeg.inf was just a text file. That explains why the folder I downloaded contained qmpeg.inf and qmpeg.acm. But I didn't touch the latter. I right-clicked the inf file and there was an option to instal which I clicked. Something flashed on the screen too fast for me to see and that was that.

    Many thanks
