Running Nero (start smart) and I have a very small video file (2 minutes). I go to burn an image copy and Nero spits out my DVD and says to insert a CD instead; I don't want that as my DVD player will not read this burned CD being a DVD imposter. Is there a way to instead burn to a DVD and not a useless CD?
Is there a fix so that Nero stops forcing me to burn a CD frisbee instead of putting the video ISO onto a DVD?
Thanks.

Use ImgBurn instead. I don't think Nero SmartStart (what a misleading name!) burns images.

I tried the same thing you are trying to do just now with an even smaller video file, as well as a normal one, and apparently Nero Start Smart simply won't accept ISO images of a very small size to burn to a DVD.
In the past, I always used the DVD files from a VIDEO_TS folder created on my hard drive, instead of an image, and that worked fine, even for small video files. Although discs burned using Nero will still play, there are some good technical reasons to use ImgBurn instead of Nero. Nero doesn't write the files to the disc per the DVD spec, and if one suddenly needs a BUP file because an IFO file was damaged, then there is a problem.
Edit] I thought I should mention that Nero accepted the 4 GB ISO image for burning to a DVD. I am not completely sure, but perhaps Nero requires a 1 GB minimum file size for burning an ISO to a DVD. When I clicked on the recorder "options" button, before burning files for a short vidieo clip (from a VIDEO_TS folder), the window displayed had a note which said at least 1 GB would be written. -
Nero writes a minimum of 1GB for compatibility reasons. Some players can't handle small videos.
The Nero spec violation can cause potentially recoverable error from a bad disk fatal, but even then not in all cases where a bup is needed. It is better to avoid having such risks but it is of low probability of actually causing a problem.
An ISO image under 1GB is a potential problem. I suggest you burn from a video_ts so nero can pad it, or use other software to generate a larger ISO. -
First gig is always written in "compatibility" mode for dvd .
Here's how for iso images under this size , it is not a restriction and can contain any data type .
Place blank dvd in drive
Kill off windows annoying "what to do" box
Fire up Nero smartstart center
Up in right hand corner , switch to "DVD"
Select from lower options to burn image
New window ... look close up in left corner ... stupid needs to be switched to DVD , again
Set burn speed to 4x
Wait till done
Task completed
No problems -

I tried to follow Bjs' instructions, figuring I might have overlooked something the first time, but the outcome was the same. I found that if I selected a very small ISO image file for burning, the only media options shown in the drop down media list were for some kind of CD. (Prior to selecting the problem ISO, DVD was shown as the selected media.) Maybe we have somewhat different software. In my case, Nero Smart Start uses an OEM version of Nero Express 6.3.1.26 for burning. Perhaps the OP is facing a similar difficulty.
The small ISO image I used was made using ImgBurn. I didn't find an option in ImgBurn to pad it out to 1 GB during the ISO build. ImgBurn readily accepted this ISO file for writing, so if there is a compatibility issue for tiny files, ImgBurn doesn't address it. -
