I am trying to import a file into my VEGAS media bin, but upon doing so and waiting for VEGAS to 'build peaks' - I instead get the message that 'peaks not available' afterwhich VEGAS just freezes up and I have to restart
This is the first time I have encountered this problem, the file in question is an AVI DX50/MPG LAYER 3
Any ideas?
BTW, what does building peaks mean?

The audio is VBR MP3, which Vegas doesn't like. You have to save the audio as uncompressed wav using virtualubmod. When you load the avi into Vegas and it starts building the peaks, hit cancel and wait. Once it cancels, delete the audio track, and replace it with the uncompressed wav. Read my blog here.

Hi there, I have opened the avi into the media bin and pressed cancel as per the above instructions, but upon dragging it to the timeline I can only see the audio (that VEGAS has the problem with) in which case, where is the video of this problem avi?Originally Posted by guns1inger

OK I am with you so far, I have got the VirtualDubMod WAV audio file in VEGAS, (as an experiment, I also used ffmpeg to enocde the avi audio to mp2 which also works)Originally Posted by guns1inger

 Whats next?

I still dont understand where the video from the original avi is though?

Drag the avi from Files Explorer to the timeline (you don't need to use the media bin for this). It will then start building the peaks. Hit the Cancel button in the bottom left corner. You should now see the video on the timeline, with a white audio track marked Peaks not Available, or similar. On the lefthand end, highlight just the audio track, and hit Del. Read my blog here.

Still nothing on the video side of thingsOriginally Posted by guns1inger

I have attempted to drag and drop the file, and then canceling the building peaks stage, to no effect

All I am left with is a file on the timeline that say 'peaks not available'

Could a mod move this to the 'Editing, cutting and joining' forum for me please?

 Cheers

Your problem is VBR MP3, which Vegas does not like. I have explained how to get around the problem, but once more can't hurt.

Drag the video to the timeline. When it starts building the peaks, hit the cancel button in the bottom left corner of the screen. Be patient, it may take a while to return control to you. Once it does, highlight just the audio track, and delete it. The video should remain and be viewable. Replace the audio track with an uncompressed wav version that you can create with Virtualdub.

If this still doesn't work then you are doing it wrong.

You are also using the wrong tools for the job. Vegas is not designed to edit Divx/Xvid compressed avi files, and Divx/Xvid is not designed to be edited. This is why you aren't getting a smooth ride.Read my blog here.

I have followed every step as instructed, that isnt the issueOriginally Posted by guns1inger

The issue is, that after dragging the clip to the timeline, there ISNT a video track alongside the problematic VBR audio track, VEGAS just wont entertain the video stream at all, all I have on the timeline is a VBR audio track that wont play

It was why I asked 'where is the video' earlier on, I have never been able to view the video stream of this file in VEGAS at all

I have no problem using VirtualDub to cough up the WAV audio file and playing that in Vegas as per your guide, thats fine, I was just wondering where the hell the video track is?

If this is somethign to do with the problem you outlined above re: VEGAS having issues with compressed Divx/Xvid, could you expand a little on this point please, is there a way to process videos in these forms in VEGAS, is it possible to decompress them ready to be imported into VEGAS for processing?

 Cheers for your help

Search posts by bj man for his FourCC divx change solution for Vegas 5, or output uncompressed or losslessly compressed versions of the video with Virtualdub. This will take up huge amounts of space potentially. If space is at a premium, you could output as DV, but this will require resizing and borders etc.

Also, ask yourself if what you are doing really requires Vegas, or could it be done in something that does handle Divx better, such as virtualdub or avisynth ?

Have you tried ungrouping the clips prior to deleting the audio? Click on the imported footage, then Press U to ungroup the audio from the video. Delete the audio track and all should be right in the world.
