If you're looking for an inexpensive player then....
I bought a LG BD530 yesterday for $80 at BB. I can verify it plays all raw M2TS (Mpeg2, AVC, VC1), MKV, Divx and Xvid files from disc or USB stick. -

It seems not to be restricted to Blu-ray specs.
I resized a file to a weird res, 1120x394 m2ts (AVC) and it played fine on the LG as it did on my PS3. -
