if media is really so "fluid" and "future-minded", why then is the information we are getting unable to be transferred to HDD, a truly future-proof media, when Blu-ray will no doubt be as obsolete as 8-track some day

streaming will only be good for things you look at once, one time.

Why would you need a local copy? You can watch it streamed any time you want, as many times as you want, on any device you want. Streaming won't always be as clunky as it is today.

The big problem with locally recorded material is setting up a database and storage system to find it. My "collection" consists of tapes I've shot (mostly digitized to hard disks), old VHS tapes (partial Excel database), DVDR's (partial Excel database), VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray media (on bookshelves), and boxes of LP/CD music (partial Excel database).

As hard disks get cheaper it becomes possible to transfer all this to a central networked server supported by a database but actually doing this is hard work. So far I've centralized my own camcorder tapes and parts of my music collection. The boxes of self recorded VHS tapes and DVDRs are partially entered into Excel.

Since joining Netflix, I've quickly learned there is no need for local storage of anything published to DVD with the exception of a few titles in my personal DVD/Blu-Ray library that I watch with friends. I assume all the rest will be available for instant streaming someday. The programs I like to store locally are news clips and documentaries in fields of interest and broadcast music performances. Most of these will never go to DVD so are unique and collectable.

actually, i think the best thing to do may be to simply make an ISO file of the entire DVD, that seems to be the most reliable method for playing my movies on the Home Entertainment Media Devices.

the Movies i used DVDshrink on did not play or work well.. I havent tried VOBblank, but im assuming its the same problem, anyway, storage isnt a problem, and i really think the best way to do back up is to do a complete back up, to include all warnings, menus, previews, etc, for the compelte experience. Yes, it seems like alot of space today, but size is just going to keep increasing, i have seen 34TB systems in action, i think thats about 1360 Blu Ray Movies at 25 GB each..

i think i will be more satisfied in the future, with whatever the future brings, having preserved the entire movie, in original condition on my HDD's

everything in my library, and no, im not going to be browsing through it on an internet streaming service, my media device can be taken into lodges, Cabins, Motor Homes, even Tents and anywhere else I happen to go or want to be without being assaulted by commercials and advertisements, and google-populated crap they think I "might enjoy"

i will never use streaming for anything other than crap i dont care to see twice, outside of that, its mine, regardless of what happens to the internet.

stop trying to justify your lack of interesting activities and productivity by selling me the ideal couch-potatos unlimited TV selection

the internet is full of crap, and the most important part of using it is avoiding 90% of it, the most painful part of using the internet is finding information and getting it off the internet, so that its not surrounded with all the other crap abusing and molesting and assaulting and accosting you

you cant even get cell-service in 50% of the downtown areas of the major cities. and you never will.

streaming will be nice for quick look ups, and there will be a rise of great sites where absolutely outstanding information is available, but it will, by no measure, replace your own library of information.

furthermore, you dont know what the future holds, there could be any number of events, policies, laws, calamities, and an infinite other number of variables which could lead to you not having that easy life of happy playful fingers you are dreaming of.

and for sure, streaming will never replace a library, i dont care how its organized, simply because a library is a collection of information that is an actual asset, a family heritage, a rock, valuable resource for Children, free of corporate advertisers, and political agendas and people who desperately need to expose you or your children to some crap

that includes things which are vital to early childhood develop, things you must purchase, there will forever be information which you must purchase elsewhere, and use for the development of your family and yourself

and that development hinges on being unplugged, and offline, and only what you have and know you need,

you are describing a giant television, merged with a giant satellite tv service, merged with the Internet

Education is not so reliable online in the first place.

resources are procured from more reliable places, and used in digital form, along with what little resources you find online that are worth gathering and adding to your home personal family library

no other form of media mattered to a large majority of people in those circles, other than the ones which made sex most enjoyable to watch.. or perhaps most realistic, and reproduced the highest quality skin tones and sex action..
