... or can MPEG-2 contain AC3? I want an MP2 + AC3 in one file. Obviously DVD / VOB can handle it, but I'd like to have the muxed file produced through GraphEdit/GraphStudio. Any way to do this?

Yes mpeg2 can have ac3/dd, mpeg2 is basically dvd video.

As far as an AVI container containing mpg2, i don't think so but i am not 100% sure as i never thought about it or wanted to try it......

    EDIT:
    From the glossary here,
An encoding standard designed as an extension of the MPEG-1 international standard for digital compression of audio and video signals. MPEG-1 was designed to code progressively scanned video at bit rates up to about 1.5 Mbit/s for applications such as CD-i. MPEG-2 is directed at broadcast formats at higher data rates; it provides increased support for efficiently coding interlaced video, supports a wide range of bit rates and provides for multichannel surround sound coding such as PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG audio.

Awesome, thanks- If mpeg2 can contain mpeg2 video and ac3 audio, then that's perfect. However, I can't find a filter that will mux the two in GraphEdit, which is my ultimate goal

I've never used GraphEdit so i don't know about that.

But i have used the "MPEG tools" in TMPGEnc to mux AC3 & M2V/mpeg2 video together into an MPEG2 file.
I don't know if that's any help but.......

And, yes, AVI can contain MPEG 2 video. You'll need an appropriate codec though. ffdshow includes an MPEG in AVI VFW codec.
