  2. I'll assume you mean the ripping / frame serving & encoding process ???

    Ripping = 15 to 20 minutes for a 2hour film... 4 to 6 gig
    Frame serving = 10 to 13 minutes
Encoding to VCD = 2 to 3 hours
    Encoding to Mpeg 2 = 3 to 4 hours

    16 x DVD Rom
    P4 1700
    1GIG ram.

    For a more normal computer:
    Ripping: 20 - 35 minutes (with a 4X dvd-rom)
    Frameserving: 10 - 15 minutes
Encoding: about 6 to 8 hours for a 2 hour movie
    Burning: 10 - 15 ( 8X cd-rw)

    933Mhz
    256MB
    10 GB of free space

Well, it took me 5 years, as I worked almost full-time while I was an undergrad, but if you really go after it, you could get your degree in 3 years, or maybe a little less.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

    Wow,
I'm not sure what constitutes a "kick ass" machine, but my encoding times are roughly 16 hours per 60min. movie segment.
I was curious how long it was taking others. I use Claddvd to rip and my times to rip a 5.5g movie are 21 min. time stamp=8min. and to actually burn a 1hr. segment is less than 4 minutes.
I use TMPGEmc v2.5 for the encoding set to noise reduction, high motion sense and high quality video.
As this is only my second DVD that I'm now working on, I haven't yet tested some lower quality settings.
I'm running among others an Athlon XP2000+ oc'd to 1742mz
Twin sticks of 256m Crucial DDR 2100, so I don't think I have a "horsepower" problem. If there are any system settings in WinXP pro that might speed up the process, I would sure be happy to know.
My startup file in MSconfig is minimal. and when running the encoding program, my cpu usage is 98-100% dedicated to TMPGEnc.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

Wage: $7.25 per hour @ your local burger-flippin-joint.
    The math: 6 hours @ $7.25 = $43.5 hard earned cold cash.
DVD: average $14.99 per movie; typical 2 hours content.
    $43.5 / $14.99 = 2.9 movies owned legally.

I don't even know what I am talking about. I guess what I am trying to say is this: "can someone show me a way of making VCD in real time without having to spend $2 grand for a kick ass computer like mr. kick-ass?" hehe

I love this forum, I have learned a lot from here from you guys. Keep up the good work.

    Now I'm really impressed

    EsHrA,

How do you manage on your "free" 10gigs of space to cram in all the vob files and then the MPEG incryptions?????
I just finished a 1hr. 35m movie and my 14gig HDD dump drive was within a gig of being full! And you can get a 2 hour movie on just 10gigs.
As I am quite new to ripping but most assuredly not to building computers, if you could explain what I might be doing wrong, It would sure be helpful.

  12. hahahaha..... did not realize that people do actually answer forums around here... what i was really asking is "HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE... for someone to answer someone's question out here" as i see lots of posts with lots of views but no replies...

    thanks...

took me two weeks to see 10 responses for this post ....

Hey philistat, if your using Tmpeg avoid Highest quality and Noise reduction, unless you want really long encodes, you have a similar system to me, so i know they wouldn drastically drop.

    Thanks,

Iv'e noticed that not using the high quality motion shortened up my encryption times dramatically. My next step will be as you suggested, not to use noise reduction.

It's too bad that the originator of this post really seems to have no interest in the quality of the replies; just the quantity

    Thanks again,

  16. sorry if you got the wrong impression.. i am impressed with the replies as it gives me, as a newbie some inputs i can learn from. however, i was trying to ilicit an idea as to how long an average post gets a reply as i have several posts still unanswered.. that was my question and i found it amusing and interesting that although my question was not answered i still had worthwhile responses... if only all posts will be as active

Then maybe you should ask the question correctly, How long does what take ?
