  1. I know the maximum resolution of a DVD is 720x480. And I understand when I use something like proshow gold
to create a dvd slideshow that it will take my high res images and dumb them down, and thus I lose quality.

What I don't understand is how does a Hollywood movie get onto dvd and have great video quality (not hd, I know),
but I can't create a slideshow on DVD with that type of quality.

    What am I missing?

High quality source material, high quality encoding.

What software are you using ?
What are your encoding parameters ? Bitrate ? No. of passes etc.

Also, when major studios master a disc, they manually adjust the encoding on a scene by scene basis so that parts that require more bitrate get given the right amount, and not what the encoder thinks si the right amount. Things like transitions - e.g. a simple fade to black or cross fade - require a lot of bitrate because every pixel in the frame is being altered. So the encoder is told where these transitions are, and what bitrate to give them.
