DVD ripping incredibly slow

Hi

Since upgrading to Windows 7 i have just noticed when ripping a DVD it now takes over 20 minutes when it used to take only 5 or 6 under xp. I have tried both of my drives and they are both doing the same. Both have DMA enabled so it seems it isn't a PIO issue.

This is the 1st time i have tried since upgrading and have tried 4 different dvd's so i can only assume it's down to windows 7.

Any suggestions would be great.

I noticed the same thing.
I just built a new more powerful system and installed windows 7, i took both the drives out of my other machine that has Vista on it, both drives have had the rip speed limit removed yet on the new machine with W7 they only rip half as fast as they do on the vista machine.

I was just ripping a dvd and was going to do a google search then i saw you just posted this.

Are your drives SATA or IDE ?

All mine are SATA.

Burning at 8x is fine just ripping slowed.

My hard drives are both Sata but my 2 DVd drives are both IDE. I have never had this problem on any other o/s so it seems it must be windows 7.

I'm on win7 64 and can rip my dvds in 5-6 mins,my samsung rips the dvds at 16x near the end while my lg chokes and stays at 11x.Both are sata.

I would say its the drives or ripper that are at fault.If you are using imgburn is it set to max for ripping?

Well at least thats good news for you, but mine are only ripping at 2x or less

I did ask what program you are using to rip to help indentify the problem.Also when you upgraded to win7 was it a fresh install?

My apologies i wasn't being sarcastic. I have tried with both dvd decrypter and dvdfab decrypter but both have the same problem. They are running in DMA mode but i'm now wondering if i have the correct ide drivers or it is using the generic windows drivers.

If your MB is an nvidia using nvidia ide drivers then that could be the problem,check to see if its windows generic ide drivers are being used which are better.

Thanks for that John. I have installed correct nvidia drivers which appears to have solved the ripping speed problem (maybe the generic drivers were wrong?) but created another one. My system now takes forever to boot up or shutdown unless i disconnect my second sata hard drive!!

Any clues?

nvidia is always buggy when it comes to dvd burners....using the ms drivers would solve the problem. post your motherboard model number or if it's a prebuilt pc like a Dell, HP, Acer, etc....post the model number of the prebuilt pc.

Download the latest NVIDIA drivers from the NVIDIA website and not from MSI website. Also fill in your computer specs in your profile which would be helpful. What's the brand/model of your DVD burners? You could also try using a new 80 wire ide cable with your IDE DVD burners.
