DVD ripping/burning very slow

I'm a total newbie when it comes to troubleshooting, I basically know my way around programs such as DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink.

The problem I've been having for a while now is that when I start to rip or burn a DVD the speed goes from 5x to 0.4x in a matter of a minute and stays that way throughout the process. I use a Pioneer DVR-108, and have just recently gotten an Asus DRW-2014L1, both having abysmal read/write speeds. I have two hard drives connected via usb 1.1 which I send/receive data to/from, I don't know if that may be the problem.

check to see if your dvd burners are stuck in PIO mode. they need to be in DMA mode. check the link below on how to set to DMA mode.

if your dvd burners are in DMA mode then the problem could exist in the usb 1.1 hard drives.

Well both are set in DMA mode, so I guess it's the USB hard drives.

If your hardware is capable of it, upgrading to USB 2.0 will increase transfer rates a bunch.

If your hardware is NOT capable as-is, you can add a USB 2.0 PCI card, they're cheap.

Definitely upgrade to USB 2.0 somehow, it might even be as simple as enabling it in your BIOS, if not then take fritzi93's advice and get a 2.0 card. I once tried to rip a DVD on my sister's computer with only USB 1.1. A movie that usually only took about 10mins took over an hour! I you have the space and connections I would recommend installing the HDD internally. To give you an idea the data transfer rate of USB 1.1 is only about 12Mbps while 2.0 is up to 480Mbps.

Yeah, I tried ripping a DVD last night straight to my hard drive, worked like a charm, fastest speeds I've seen in months! And just now I updated my drivers, and my dvd read speads are off the charts, I'm getting 12.5x speeds, this is amazing.
