  1. I need some help here!!! Ok, I have a new Dell system, with a 64MB GeForce4 MX Graphics card with TV-Out, and Sound Blaster Live! 1024 Digital Sound Card in it, and I also have a Gateway system that has a STB TVPCI OEM FM WDM Audio Capture, and a , STB TVPCI OEM FM WDM Video Capture in it, so now the question is, can I use the STB card or cards from my Gateway in my new Dell to capture video from my JVC Digital Video camera??? I guess what I am trying to say is will the stuff that is in my Gateway work in my Dell??? Does that make sense? Is there anyone out there that knows about this???
alright now, this is what is in the Dell system that does not have the capture card in it, so I need someone one to tell me what to get for this system.
    Dell Dimension 8200 Pentium 4 2.26 GHz
    512 MB PC800 RDRAM
    64MB GeForce4 MX Graphics Cart with TV-Out
    40GB ATA-100, 7200RPM Hard drive
    Win XP OS
Sound Blaster Live 1024 Digital Sound Card
so what do you think we need here????? what kind of capture card should we buy????

As long as the video and audio capture hardware is on a separate PCI board then you can pull it out of your Gateway and into the new Dell.

When Windows next boots it will automatically try to configure the STB boards so everything works in harmony. If it fails then you've probably got a few hours of manual tinkering with IO Ranges and IRQs on your hands.

  3. Nugrl:

The best best way to transfer video from your DV camcorder to your PC is via a firewire connection. Firewire PCI cards are available at any of the major stores such as Circuit City, Staples, etc. Some sound cards such as the Creative Audigy have a firewire port on them already.

Once the card has been installed along with its drivers, you just connect your camcorder to the card with a firewire cable and run a program on your PC to transfer the video.

You're not capturing the video here; you're just transferring it.

Programs that I have used to transfer the video include DV_IO and what I currently use, ScenalyzerLive.

as I said above, now seeing what exactly is in this system, do you think the STB TVPCI OEM FM WDM AUDIO AND VIDEO Capture cards would work in this system????

  5. If you're wanting to 'capture' from your MiniDV camcorder, go buy a 1394 (firewire) card and plug it into your PC. You connect your camcorder with a cable to this card and you can transfer the video to your computer.

  6. Most important piece of information is what OS are you running on each and are there drivers for the Dell's OS available for the STB card. As I recall 3dFX bought STB and since they're gone, XP drivers (for instance) may not be available. The STB card, or cards, can almost certainly be made to work in the Dell, it is questionable wether it would be worth the effort.

As stated above, if DV camera is your source, you really would be better off with a Firewire card

  7. Well the Gateway is running 98 on it and the Dell is running XP Home. I was wondering about the driver issue with XP. Is there anyone out there running this OS that is really happy with it? The more I am seeing it the less I think I like it. but hey, thats just me. So you guys think firewire is the best way to go??? ok, let me ask you this , what brand should I go with? and yes, I am trying to capture video from a JVC Digital Video camera but also have alot of analog stuff I want to transfer to disc too. So what is the best way to go, and by who?

  8. Firewire cards are pretty much all the same, check your SB card, it may have one. Some analog capture cards also have a firewire port. As mentioned before, firewire is more a file transfer than a "capture".

I have only used ATI capture cards, and have invested a lot of effort getting them working well so I tend to be biased, but they are decent gaming cards as well, some have firewire, remote control, and are relatively inexpensive.

  9. ok guys, follow me here, I am out the door and on my way to the local computer store, so what video capture card do I want to purchase. I need a name here, I know nothing about this. This is where I need your help, based on what I said is in the system. I need this capture card to be able to "capture" or "transfer" (whatever you guys want to call it), analog as well as digital video. So what is the best one out there, for the best price??? oh, and should I also add, easy to use to the list?
