I have been working with directories of DVD content consisting of .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files in a directory called VIDEO_TS. I have burnt these to a DVD in a directory called VIDEO_TS. I also create on the burnt DVD a directory called AUDIO_TS, which is empty. I do this in Nero using its 'Make a Data DVD' option. I do this because when I browse a commercial DVD this is what I see. Nero then warns me that this won't result in a playable DVD, but I plough on (if I choose the Nero option 'Make Your Own DVD Video it leads me down a horrendous route that doesn't seem to support .VOBs, etc). I end up with a DVD that is detected by my computer as a DVD, and it will play it, but neither of my domestic DVD players will play it. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, and how to put my .VOBs, etc onto a DVD that will be playable in a domestic DVD player?

    Thank you for any help.

If you are burning as a data disc, that's wrong. A DVD is a special structure with fairly rigid rules and has to be burned correctly. See 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left on this page for the structure, format and specifications. A DVD is 'authored' to create the structure from a DVD compliant video and audio file, but Nero can do that. Just use the DVD burning mode. The AUDIO_TS folder is unneeded and almost always empty, so you don't really need to add it, though it takes up very little space.

    And welcome to our forums.

If you insist on using Nero then it MUST be burnt as a DVD/Video disc, it probably play sin your computer as it can recognise the files and assume its a DVD so play them

DVD standalone players will fall over and fail if its not exactly what it expect to find

For something that is guaranteed to work everytime, and doesn't care if you have the correct folders created as it does it automatically and also advises you of the fact, try having a look at IMGBurn, it virtually tries everything it can to give you a DVD that willplay in virtually any DVD player around. Including XBox, PS3, etc, etc

Its 110% freeware, and more importantly produces very compatable burns which some software doesn't correctly

Choose the 'build' option from IMGBurn, point the file selector to the folder where your DVD files are, and it will virtually do the rest for you

I don't have Nero installed anymore as I got fed up of the 'issues' with DVDs not playing correctly and the fact the latest releases are now over-bloated huge pieces of software that won't even upgrade without a full uninstall and reinstall, and yes I was using it for a very long time upto v8.xx from v5.xx

''Make Your Own DVD Video" is the wrong choice for burning DVD-Video files you already have. Simply go straight to and open Nero Express from Start-> All Programs-> Nero. Choose the DVD- Video Files option. Now just drag/drop the folder you want to burn into it. You can use the folder containing both the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders or just the VIDEO_TS only if you like.

Depending on where you got the DVD and what discs you use can also have a bearing on it playing in your standalones.

I've never had any problems with Nero's burns.
