    Greetings.
We have this LG RC195 it's about 3 maybe 4 years old.
In recent months it's starting to reject DVD's.
The message that appears on the screen says
"unknown disc. please check disc again"
This occurs even when we hire a DVD or purchase a brand new DVD.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem.

It's possibly just a dirty lens, you could try cleaning it. Otherwise, it is most likely failing. Time to get a new one.

I've recently replaced the burner in that particular model with an PC IDE LG DVD writer. The original had a standard 40-pin IDE interface and 4-pin power connector. It connected to the mainboard via an adapter PCB and mini-flex cable.

Use the open/close function on the RC195 front panel or remote control, not the button on the burner itself. You'll need to remove the front facia of the IDE burner to make it fit inside the case. Use strong double-sided tape to mount it, and cable ties to hold it in place. Otherwise you could make up some brackets for a more professional installation.
