ok. wonderwho claims you need to replace the eprom on these with a reprogrammed eprom to take off the macrovision. that macrovision is causing problems for me and i don't even have a vcr connected!
now that's some bullshit.
i've read about updating firmware for the 660 w/ a cdr, but has anyone personally had success doing this? it sounds kind of strange that a dvdplayer would be able to program its own eprom. that sounds like a flash thing.
personal success anyone?

Depends on what firmware version of your APEX. It it is 660-8-AM or 660-8-MM, your player can upgrade firmware or patch for disable marcrovision and region free via CDR/W.

Better instructions are at the second link.
Procedure depends on the bios version, but basically once you get the patched firmware rename it to "U660-AM.ROM" (where AM is the Bios version), and burn it to a mode 1 cd and put the file in the root directory. Stick it in the player, it will scan the cd (you might have to hit play) the color of the screen will go crazy as it updates the bios. Then it says Done and pops out the cd. Turn it off and on and you're ready to go.

Statuspending - the answer to your question is no. You can do multiple updates if you choose. Originally the 8-MM firmware could only be upgraded once but that has changed since the 8-MM has been dumped and hacked.
Sing Sing - it may be a huge site but it will have any answer to any question you may have. If you expend just a minimal amount of effort you will become much clearer on this topic. Do you know how the search function works? Use it and you will have your answers. It can be much easier and quicker to find your answers this way.
Good luck my friend!

How about this one "http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/read.php?f=17&i=1581&t=1581"
Very good and clear instruction but make sure you check your APEX firmware version first (instruction is in that forum also)
