I notice that after installing automatic updates my XP PRO went down to a XP. At least I don't see Professional at start up or on my desktop. I am concern if this is affecting functionality of my OS in anyway. I know updates can be done manually if needed, so my question is why do auto updates in the first place? I mean "they" can pretty much do anything what they want with your computer without your knowledge or approval.![]()

You can easily turn off updates, or maybe better set them to download but not install until you inspect and approve them. MS updates seem to download a lot of useless crap for MS programs you may not have or don't ever use on your computer.
I wouldn't worry to much about the Windows splash screen. But if you go to 'Control Panel>System' you should see 'Microsoft XP Professional' there.
Pro and Home are basically the same OS. Pro has better encryption and some more networking tools and some other options that 90% of us would probably never use, but otherwise very little difference. Here's a quick comparison between the two OS versions: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx -

For reasons only know to MS, the Pro went away on the splash screen with SP2. It still is Pro though if that was what you initially installed.

Be sure to read the FAQ and look at the forums, you can find answers to most questions. This program is also a huge time saver when you have a freshly installed version of windows, since all updates are contained in a single package. It allows the user to chose what updates to install (nothing is done without permission). A description and KB link are provided about each individual patch. Some people say dog is mans best friend. It went from XP Pro to just XP for the same reason schools are now not giving out awards for kids. Giving one kid an award makes the other kids not getting one feel bad.
In this case Microsoft users with 'just' XP felt inferior to those with XP Pro. This simply appeases the XP users and makes them think they're just as good. Or, at least, don't know that there's a difference. They now feel just as special as the XP Pro users.Have a good one,

Are you the same flytrap running 4 firewalls? It is still XP Pro. Only the startup splash screen doesn't say so. All the features are there and if you right click on MY computer and pick properties it still shows there and so on.
It sounds like you would rather have a insecure PC that say XP Pro tna one that has the newer Sps and is more secure.
Firewalls will not keep you from getting infected by webpages due to unpatched security vulnerabilities. -
