I have been successfully backing up for years using RipIt4Me, then DVDShrink, then burning with DVD Decrypter. I normally just back up the menu and the movie, leaving off the extras. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs, and burn at 4x.

Recently I've noticed some of my backups freeze for a second or two, every 5 to 10 minutes in various areas of the movie, often moving in frozen steps for up to 5 minutes. The freezing also includes strong pixellating.

I know all of my software is old, and can't be updated.

I guess my problems are to do with the newer copy protection now on discs, and I am very out of touch with current available backup software.

What program(s) should I change to, to solve my problem? Or is there something else I should be doing?

    Thanks

While your software choices are indeed dated, there are few things to consider.

DVDFab HD decrypter is now the weapon of choice for most ripping, most of the newer protection schemes are not used as often over here. This means that while you are using older software, it still generally works as well now as it did back then.

Changes you might consider would include Imgburn instead of DVD decrypter for burning. Same author, better burner but no ripping.

Cleaning your player. It sounds more like your player may getting old and doesn't like burned media as much any more. Do you see the same issues with these discs in other players ?

Or it could be your burner that is getting past it.

To me it reads more like a hardware issue than a software issue at this stage.

    Thanks for the help.

I think I may have stumbled across the main reason I'm getting intermittent freezing/pixellating.

In desperation I checked that my burner was set to DMA (always has been).

    SHOCK, HORROR.
Windows, or something had set my burner to PIO.
And there was a message explaining that I was getting too many erros when set at DMA, so it decided to set the burner to PIO.

I have re-installed the latest drivers for the burner and for the controller, and obviously set the mode back to DMA (Ultra DMA 4 - Ultra66).
I don't know if the "errors" was me trying to rip discs with scratches which did cause lots of errors, or whether it has something to do with the cabling between the burner and the M/B.

    The burner is a ASUS DRW-1608 P3S.

I'll also do as you advise, and update my software.

Hopefully this will solve my problems.

    Thanks again
