I tend to put my laptop on table of some sort in front of me which makes me hunch my back and it gets very uncomfortable, I do this because I've heard having it on you lap is bad for you cause of the heat it generates.

I came across this and wondered if anyone has tried something like this?

Depends what you are doing. When you are just typing the laptop runs cool. If you force processing it gets hot.

I use a 1/4" hardboard cut to the same dimensions as the laptop. I allows for the gap that the tabs on the laptop are supposed to provide and it is effective for protecting my legs from the heat. It only cost me a couple bucks for the board. It also easily fits into my laptop case with the laptop.

Also depends on the laptop. Mine exhausts from the bottom left side. As long as I move it a bit to the left on my lap and expose the exhaust grille, it runs fairly cool. But it's still a bit warm to have sitting on my lap for extended periods. Worst is to set it on a fluffy carpet as the exhaust and intake can be blocked.

I know that they are called "LAPTOPS", but I find it very uncomfortable to use a notebook computer that way. It puts a lot of strain on my back, neck, arms, and legs. I use my notebook for everything except video processing - I use a desktop for that. I keep the notebook in the middle of my desk right in front of me for easy access, and when I do not need it, I push it out of the way.

The Compaq Armada M300, discontinued before HP bought Compaq, had a unique design feature in that the battery was mounted externally at the back and could flip down to provide keyboard tilt and nice airflow underneath. I have been looking to replace my PIII 500 version of that machine but no one has anything like it, and since this machine is relegated to web surfing on my lap, it might just get another year's use.

I got this cooler when it was on sale at Fry's for $7, but they also have this one for $8 shipped. They work extremely well, in my experience. My wife has this gateway that gets slightly hotter than a supernova, but the cooler cools it down to a point where it won't impact my future heirs.
