Hi, I want to take an avi file, and split it in exactly 3 parts, and then want to save each part separately.
I'm not sure if vdub can do this?
I don't want to select a part, and then direct stream, then open the video again, and select the other part etc..
I want to be able to just pu the 3 split points and let the software automatically output each part, without re-encoding.

Can vdub do this, or any other program?

    thanks.

VDub can't do it one pass, however you can use the batch job function to create three jobs - one for each part - then save all three in one go. When you click on File -> Save, tick the box at the very bottom of the dialogue that says "Don't run this job now . . . . ". Once you have all the jobs saved, click on File -> Job Control, and start the batch

  3. VirtualDub:

    File -> Open
    Video -> Direct Stream Copy
mark in, mark out, File -> Save as AVI
mark in, mark out, File -> Save as AVI
mark in, mark out, File -> Save as AVI

Didn't know you could do it without deleting first. Nice trick

    Thanks for that.
just to make sure, I have to only cut using the keyframes right? because I just chose any frame to mark in/out, and when I put the parts back together, there was stuttering at the split/joins.

Yes. If your objective is to split a video into three parts and then be able to append them together to restore the original video you must cut on keyframes.

If you are simply saving out three random shots from a video you must start each saved segment on a keyframe but the segment can end on any frame.

This is because most frames in compressed videos only encode the differences between frames. Only keyframes encode the entire picture. If you saved a segment without a keyframe the decoder would have no way of knowing what the entire frame was supposed to look like.

If you try to start on a non keyframe VirtualDub automatically starts the saved segment at the prior keyframe. Hold down a shift key while seeking in VirtualDub to stop only on keyframes.

Ok, thanks. If I could just ask a quick vdub related question, if I change a filter's settings, and choose a compression encoder, and restart vdub, I have to set them again.
Is there a way to make it so the last used settings stick?

File -> Save Processing Settings will save the filters and settings. Not sure if it saves the compression settings though.

Thanks, that worked. It remembers the last setting for compression.

After a bit of playing around, I thought instead of cutting video into parts, I would add a little edit for the parts I wanted throughout the video and use smart rendering, but its not working.

This is what I'm doing. I have a 1hr video, I want to cover a spot, or blur it out, once in the video for a period of 2secs.
The only thing I found that would do what I wanted was the region remove filter ( I also tried something called logoAway4.01, which has more options, but it crashes vdub when frame range is input).
So I chose full processing mode, smart rendering ticked, compression is xvid, and the filter is added. But when I save, the whole 1hr is compressed, instead of just that 2sec filter.

Is there something I'm not configuring properly?

    thanks.

  10. VirtualDub's smart rendering doesn't work if you apply any filters. Even the Null Transform (do nothing) filter will shut of smart rendering. It's only useful for cut and paste editing.

You should cut out the section you want to modify, modify and encode it, then splice it back in.

    oh thats too bad!

So then, I would split the video into 3 parts (prt1, prt2- the 2secs that needs encoding, and prt3), open and apply filter to prt2 and encode, then open prt1 and join prt2+3 to it.
Would that be the easiest way?

    thanks again.

  12. I would open the source. Enable Full Processing Mode and enable Smart Rendering.

Mark-in at the start. Mark-out at the start of the section you want to blur. Save as AVI -- Part1.avi.

Mark-in at the start of the section you want to blur. Mark out at the end of that section. Add the filter(s). Save as AVI -- Part2.avi.

Mark-in at the end of the blurred section, Mark-out at the end of the video. Remove the filters. Save as AVI -- Part3.avi.

Open Part1.avi. Append Part2.avi. Part3.avi should be appended automatically. Change to Direct Stream Copy mode. Save as AVI -- finished.avi.
