So I'm looking to set up a Vista MCE system that would allow for two video outputs (read: dual-monitor, but in CLONE mode); the first would be a DVI or HDMI to the main display, while the second would be component to a video matrix switch (to service other rooms).

This is probably feasible with many single graphic cards - but the twist is I would like the two video feeds to be different resolutions: the digital video output should be native rate for the display (e.g., 1366x768 for a typical plasma), while the component output should be 720p.

This I don't think can be done with a single video card - but I'm wondering whether it could be accomplished with two video cards? That is, have Vista MCE set the primary video card (DVI or HDMI) for one resolution, while using a completely different resolution on the second card (VGA with breakout cable)?

Any thoughts/suggestions re: this would be appreciated!

CLONE mode only functions with 2 monitors set to the same resolution. I have a two monitor setup here and after switching to CLONE mode, I can only change the resolution of the primary display, the secondary automatically changes to match the primary.

  3. Clone mode doesn't require both monitors be the same resolution. One can be a smaller resolution that pans around the main monitor's larger desktop. I have one computer set up like this. This may also be called Zoom mode.

Another option that many graphics cards support is Theater mode (that's what ATI calls it, Matrox calls it DVD Max, I don't remember what nVidia calls it) where the video overlay content (whatever a media player is playing) is automatically displayed full screen on the secondary monitor, even in the video is windowed on the main monitor. Matrox supports this especially well.
