I just purchased a new Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder. The unit records 1080i 17Mbps video to my new 16GB Class 6 SDHC memory card. So far I have not able to find ANYTHING that will edit this video. Heck, I can't even find anything that will read it in and burn a DVD (except for the lame Panasonic HDWriter software that came with it).
As far as I can tell, Adobe Premiere does not support AVCHD video, and has no plans to support it in the foreseeable future.
Pinnalce Studio 11.1 claims to support AVCHD, but when I edit the videos, the video part just plays back really quick, and the audio seems normal. For a one minute clip, all the video "fast forwards" during the first few seconds and then freezes as the audio continues on at a normal pace.
Sony Vegas (8.0d build 139) also claims to support AVCHD, but it locks up (must do CTRL+ALT+DEL) each time I try to open any of my m2ts source files.
I have also tried Ulead VideoStudio 11.5, which claims to "fully support" AVCHD. Each time I try to open a m2ts file with it, it gives a "File format mismatch" error.
So guys, what's the deal with this camcorder? What is Panasonic doing with the encoding that is causing it to break ALL VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE?
Do any of you guys have this camcorder? I am seriously considering returning it - this is a JOKE!!! (and a really bad one too).
Do you guys have any suggestions on some software that I can use to edit these "special"? AVCHD files?
TIA,
JP

sony vegas really only works with sony avchd cams. (by design)
there is a panasonic version of the avchd codec out there but it's really hard to come by. iirc i had to find and install the p2 drivers and software to get it.
the quicktime alternative codec may work and i've heard but had no experience that premiere works with panasonic avchd.
avchd is never going to be editor friendly just like all long gop mp4.--

You can convert your .MTS via the following method.
https://forum.videohelp.com/topic346331.html
Install Lagarith codec
Open the resulting .AVS files in VirtualDub and save as AVI with the Lagarith codec.
The resulting AVI can be opened in premiere -
AVCHD is still a work in progress. It is more prone to motion artifacts and other aberrations. It is currently only used in some consumer camcorders. Each generation of cameras that use AVCHD gets a little better but it still has a way to go. Even if you have an editing program that supports it, it requires a lot of processor power to edit. One way to edit is to use a product like Elecard http://www.elecard.com/products/products-pc/consumer/avchd-dv-transcoder/ and convert to DV which you can then use is your editor of choice.
