  1. I´m using DVD2AVI + TMPGenc + bbMpeg and I supose that I´m doing something wrong.

I have been trying a encode "the One" to VCD at 352 x 288 and to SVCD at 480 x 576, both with a video bitrate of 3000 and ghost reduction.

I have seen that the final video is better for VCD that SVCD ( in some scenes with a lot of motion, SVCD shows big pixels and ghost ).

    Why ?

  2. With the same bitrate but a higher resolution, the data is more 'spread out' if you see what I mean. Bitrate is bits per second and is independant of resolution. However, a hiher resolution image has more pixels, hence more data. So for a given bitrate, you will get less bits per pixel on average for a higher resolution image. This results in more compression being required, hence the artefacts on high motion scenes where bit rate is at a premium.

    Does this explain things?

bbmpeg is complete crap for svcd encdoing thats your problem.

Get CCE its absoloutly wonderfulk and will make faboulous svcd with a bitrate of 2500

  4. In this case bbMPEG ain't the reason !
With the same bitrate VCD is always, so even with CCE, better the SVCD.
Assume a bitrate of 1400 with SVCD....it would be terrible even with CCE. While for VCD 1400 (infact it would be a XVCD then) gives a very good quality.
Resolution is the explanation in this case.

MPEG2 (SVCD) needs a higher resolution then MPEG1 (VCD) to get the same quality. And because the resolution of SVCD is a lot bigger, it also already needs a higher bitrate (more pixels need to get refreshed). So also for that a higher bitrate is needed.
All in all, SVCD can give a better quality, but for that it needs a higher resolution, MPEG2 insteed of MPEG1 and very important because of those 2 also a much higher bitrate.

But on the otherside you're right. CCE is better then bbMPEG. But in both cases the above problem is the same for both.
