    Hello,

I had 2 xvid files with vbr mp3 which I tried to join together with virtualdub and compress audio to CBR, but the audio was way out of sync, so i decided to save the audio from both files and compress it to mp3 cbr and then run it into virtualdub again.

So Now I have 2 raw wav files that I wish to join together, I tried running the files into Wavelab and Audacity but none of those applications would work.

How would I go about joining these two uncompressed wav files together, so then i can run them back into virtualdub so I can have audio on my two video files that im joining into one.

How did you extract them in VirtualDub? You need to use full audio processing and save out as a WAV or you may end up with a MP3 in a WAV wrapper. Audacity should accept a regular WAV file with no problems. You also need to have LAME MP3 ACM installed for Audacity to be able to convert back to MP3.

Another program that may be able to handle joining videos with MP3 VBR audio is AviDemux.

Next, if you are joining them to next encode to MPEG video for a DVD, you may avoid some sync problems by not joining them at all, and instead encode them individually. Or even easier, use a program like FAVC or ConvertxToDVD and just add both Xvids in and let the program do the encoding and joining. This works well for most Xvids off the net and is one of the simplest and easiest methods. Both programs should handle VBR audio, if not, you can use the WAV file from VD and add it back, replacing the VBR audio. Then you could delete the originals after a sucessful conversion.

Lastly, if you are going to view them with a Divx player, then AviDemux may be able to just join them as is, and you would have no quality loss from a conversion.

With Virtual dub I opened the 2 Xvid files separately and for each one I did the following :

    File > Save WAV

I had to wait a while until it was finished and then
I ended up with two WAV files about 900mb each.

Since im going to join these 2 video files together, and thats how I want to do it, I need to join the two wav files first, so then Once I join the two video files in vdub using "Append AVI Segment", I can then add the audio, thats why I will need to join the two Uncompressed WAV files together, before I can run them back into virtualdub.

I suggest you try joining the original AVI files in AVIDemux. It is a lot better at keeping audio in sync, and is not fazed by VBR MP3.

There is something seriously wrong with your WAVE files if Audacity can't join them.

Open them separately with GSPOT and see what it says about them.

Audacity doesn't even want to open the file, and when I drag it into wavelab, nothing happens.

When I try to load it into Gspot, it says "Unable to open file, The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"

I tried opening it with Mediainfo and it gives the following information :

    WAV:889 MiB, 1h 20m
    1 Audio Streams : PCM

First Audio Stream : 1536Kbps, 48.0 KHz, 2 Channels, PCM

I tried to open one of the video's in AVIdemux and I got an error "video1.avi does not exist"

This suggests there is a problem with the name of the file or a directory, or volume (disk) it's in.

Are all the file and directory names simple alphabetic characters, no punctuation, spaces, or other symbols? Are they excessively long?

Not all programs can handle more creative filenames.
Shorten and simplify all the file and folder names and see if that makes a difference.

    File > Save WAV
Did you use 'Full processing mode' for the audio? This can be very important.

And AlanHK's point is well taken. Long filenames or sometimes filenames with spaces or especailly improper characters can cause problems. Lastly, I assume in 'Folder Options>View', you have unchecked, 'Hide extensions for known file types'? Otherwise you may not be seeing the true extension.

I tried to copy the 2 video files to another folder, and renaming them too, and then AVIdemux accepted them.
Why does AVIDemux have a codec called Xvid4? what is the difference to the normal xvid?

Another thing with AVIdemux, once I finished encoding, the file was about 700mb, quite big, where as virtualdub I was able to get it down to 350mb, I used the same settings, 2 Pass and the bit rate I set was 512k

If the settings were the same, the file size would be the same.

Yeah im surprised why the file sizes are different, isnt it because AVI Demux uses a codec called Xvid4 and Vdub uses just Xvid, isnt their some differences there? I see on AVI Demux on the Xvid4 settings, the config page is much different to the config page for Xvid on Virtualdub.

Bitrate x Running Time = Filesize.

Doesn't matter if it is Xvid, Divx, Mpeg-2 or FLV. It is a constant. Xvid is simply a variation on Xvid, backwards compatible and will produce the same size file given the same numbers. You can hide and/or assume many of the parameters if you don't want to give the user too much freedom. There are front ends to Xvid that give a lot less control. This doesn't change the simple and universal truth of the equation above.

Is the audio compressed at a different rate?

I got it to work, Was a problem with the filenames, Now I was able to join both audio files together with audacity.

When running them back into Virtualdubmod, it did not want to encode when i was using the job control ,to run the 2 jobs (1 pass, then second pass), It would give an error complaining about the audio sampling rates being different EVEN THOUGH I DISABLED the defualt vbr stream and used my wav file, when I encoded without using the job control it worked fine, looks like a bug with virtualdubmod.

I think AVIdemux and Virtualdubmod were giving the same filesizes, I think I had changed one of the settings and forgot I had.

Is there anyway to use the Common xvid front end with AVIdemux? as it has more options to chose from, this may be useful for when encoding for devices such as my iriver x20, as it refuses to play xvid files, thats why I need the front end that has more options avaliable. I know I could just use vdub, but AVIdemux handles files with vbr audio much better.

So is there any way to use different xvid front ends with AVIdemux? or am I only limited to using the built in ones.

    Thanks.
