  1. I want to capture my 8mm (PAL) home videos with the Pinnacle PCTV Pro, and then edit, encode & burn them as (X)VCDs. What resolution should I use for capture: 352x288, 384x288 CIF or 768x576 FULL?

I tried all of these and made a XVCD for my standalone DVD player. Couldn't see any significant difference on the TV screen between 352x288 and 720x576. So does it make any sense to capture at high resolution from a 8mm camcorder?

  2. Always capture at the highest resolution possible. If you need to "make it smaller" itll still look good. If you try to capture at the smallest and make it bigger, you get more pixel problems

  3. I suggest 352x480 (NTSC) or equiv. in PAL. That way you get both the progressive (dual field) picture. That is how I do it with my Hi-8 camcorder.. Any more than that is overkill IMO.

  4. I struggled with that problem for quiet a long time. Now I follow the basics VCDHELP has advized. And I am quiet satisfied for already half a year:

    1. The maximum resolution you can choose depends a little bit on your configuration.
    2. VCD/PAL is always (at maximum) 352*288. This is the standard and the TMPGenc PAL/VCD-frame is based on this resolution.
    3. SVCD/PAL is at least 480*560. This is according the TMPGenc/Pal/SVCD-frame. I use this resolution: OK!!
If you have a fast computer you can try more.
