  2. Hi,
It's stupid i know, but you are probably using non-brand dvd-r's
The pioneer will only allow brand-dvd-r's to be burnt at 2x..
Some of the non-brands can be burnt at 2x, but most of them not..
It's a big issue on most of the forums...

    Regards

  3. Update your Pioneer DVD-burner to the latest firm-ware. Go to

    http://www.cd-recordable.com/

and pickup some blank DVD-Rs. Have your authoring software output your project to your hard drive (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders). Burn the 2 folders with Prassi (Data Project). I have been burning at 2X speed with no problems.

  4. From Pioneer site:

    Writing with 2X DVD-R Media

Beginning with the launch of the DVR-A03/103 DVD-R/RW drive, Pioneer has included a feature allowing 2X recording of DVD-R. This feature has been brought about by Pioneer's own engineering efforts. Within each drive are media specific optimizations called 'write strategies'. These write strategies are tailor made for specific media brands, making 2X DVD-R recording possible for those submitted to Pioneer.

Currently, the DVD Forum's specification for DVD-R recording is at 1X speed. Pioneer is able to base its 2X DVD-R recording feature on the DVD Forum's specification, making it possible to include this benefit to its customers.

Before Pioneer can support a candidate "For General" DVD-R media brand with 2X recording, the following steps must be completed. First, the media must pass the DVD Forum's verification tests for 1X DVD-R. After clearing these tests, Pioneer, with the media maker's cooperation, fine tunes the drive's write strategy for 2X recording, and then confirms the media's performance with mass production DVD-R samples. Pioneer can only consider DVD-R media to be 2X compatible after it passes these tests.

This development system, coupled with a given media brand's release date, means that 2X DVD-R recording may not be possible with all media. Unlike high speed CD-R recording, 2X DVD-R recording requires optimization. Without optimization, the possibility exists that the recorded media will lack the desired playback quality. This system has been implemented in order to avoid customer dissatisfaction with the performance of DVD-R media that is deemed not compatible with 2X recording.

Pioneer will continue to contact various media manufacturers to increase the number of 2X record compatible DVD-R media.
As you can see, 2x is not even a standard.

  5. I have a dvr-103 burner with firmware 1.65 and can burn at 2X in nero 5.5.7.8 with following media; verbatim, pioneer, imation, apple, tdk, mitsui, and sometimes cd-recordable.com's dvd's. All media is obviously dvd-r general 2.0.

  6. There are *a lot* of DVD-R's on the market now even at generic prices that claim to be 2X compatible. Unless they're all lying, I think the list of 2X discs is much larger than it used to be.

I have an Pionner A104 and have burnned in 2x with the media :

    Maxell DVD-R code DVS-R47A/U reorder # 635020 OK!!!
Pionner DVD-R code DVS-R47A/U no more specs OK!!!

With both NERO says 2X write possible, and really is ok.

But with generic media, NERO only shows 1X, and the record is perfect, too, but 1x only...

I think that until now, in Brazil we have only branded media with 2X support; all the others 4 that I have tried are 1X only.

In fact I compiled a list of inexpensive DVD-R options:
