I'm using an ATI AIW 7500. I record to mpeg whenever possible, but for recording mpeg2 video, it takes up all my system resources, and results in dropped frames w/ the slightest action by any other program (ex. AOL IM). .vcr is recorded by hardware, so it doesn't bog down the computer that much. Does anyone know of any software that can be used to convert ATI .vcr format video files to .mp2?

As far as I know the ATI .VCR format is some kind of proprietary MPEG format. I think it is software encoded, not hardware encoded - at least it is on my AIW Pro 128. The format may be optimised in some way for the ATI hardware which is why you get better results.

Anyway, to get back to your question, you can convert VCR files to MPEG2 using the media library utility supplied with MMC. I can't remember the exact procedure, but I think that the menu that appears when you right click on the file allows you to convert.

MMC has a function built in to do this.

Make sure you have MMC installed. Then click START, PROGRAMS, ATI MULTIMEDIA CENTER, and LIBRARY. Now when that window is open, open a Windows Explorer window to the directory with your .VCR file. Now left click and DRAG the file from the Explorer window into the library window. Then click YES when it asks if you want to add that file to the library. Now find the line that represents the .VCR file you just added and RIGHT click. Then click EXPORT TO MPEG2. It will create a new copy of the file in the MPEG2 format, in the same directory as the original. Keep in mind, the quality is still dependent on the capture settings. Hope this helps.

Thanx fore the info. I was too lazy to poke around that too much, cuz it sucks for file playing. I try to let it locate files for me, and it crashes every time it searches. I didn't think you could use drag-and-drop, so I can prolly actually use media center now. Although, they could have engineered it better. I say use multiple playlists like Winamp3, And maybe maximize the interface and text size by default (Even if you can use the remote from 20 feet away, it doesn't mean you can read it.) And I know the .vcr is priprietary, but I'm not sure but I think it's encoded by hardware. The .mpeg format has a lot stricter guidelines for recording w/ cpu speed and stuff like that. And I usually ctrl-alt-del and shut down all unneeded programs, but I need my IM!!! I'm an addict!!! Thanx.
