Having mastered capturing and converting from an analog source (yeah right), I decided to try my hand at DVD ripping.
I've run into some snags when trying to produce a subtitled VCD/SVCD project. Maybe some of you with experience can help.
I used smartrip to copy the necessary files to my hard drive.
From there, I know of two options. One is to use DVDx, which can encode to VCD/SVCD from the vob files. DVDx is also capable of integrated subtitling. However, the quality of the mpegs is below average, along with the subtitles.
The second option that I know of is to use DVD2AVI, to create an AVI file. From there, I can use Virtualdub and the vobsub filter, frameserve to Tmpgenc. The problem is, I don't have enough disk space to store the avi of the whole movie. Between my two hard drives, I have about 38 gigs of storage. Each drive has 19 gigs free.
I thought about doing the movie in segments, but that would screw up the subtitles.
If anyone can offer some suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Use dvd2avi as a frameserver. Instead of saving an AVI save the project.
Have a look at the convert > frameserve section. -
If I use dvd2avi as a frameserver, I won't be able to add the subtitles.
I need to run Virtualdub, in order to make use of the vobsub filter.

Thank you. -
if you save the proyect with DVD2AVI and convert the d2v file to avi
(in 3 seconds ) with VFAPI you can open it with VirtualDub then
add the subtitle filter and frameserve to TMPGEnc. -
Found this tread, which answered some of my questions, but when I try to load the vobsub.dll as a filter in virtualdub, it says it is not a filter. I read somewhere that all I had to do is rename the vobsub.dll to vobsub.vdf?
I have:
vitualdub 1.4.10
vobsub 2.14
any help would be greatly appreciated.

oops, it's been a long day and been spending hours reading...read some outdated stuff and now I got it...new vobsub installer...just pick virtualdub filter during the install.
BTW, gave Flaskmpeg a try but it crashes...so far, tmpg has worked for me and I'm very satisfied with it...I just wish it supported subs (like there was a vobsub filter for it) directly. Oh well...
