  1. Nero's website shows OS minimum as Win2K and up for the current version.

However, in their support area there is also a link to Microsoft's website for a download that's needed for WIN98SE in order to run Nero 7.5x . . . .

Since this seems contradictory, I thought I'd ask the experts here: Is anyone running Nero 7.5x on Win98SE?

What if they can't update their 98SE tower but have upgraded the drives, and want Nero support for those drives... or the newer features in Nero?

(Yes, I know someone will likely come along and say, "Well, you should be using (x) instead." )

  4. Stick with version 6.6, works just fine on 98. Seven is a bloated pig.

  5. Nero 6.3. also works perfect with 98SE.
I know this doesnt help with your situation but flip MS or Nero Support an email and you might get lucky with a how to for the problem. After all they are the ones that say there is a work around.
    Good Luck,

  6. >> Abond asks, "Why would anyone want to do this?"

    Answer: Why not? Reasons:

o I have a fast WIN98SE machine using a great laser printer for which there is no XP driver, seldom crashes, works like a charm, etc., etc., etc., tweaked just to my liking. I have a laptop with XP on it and my experience with XP does NOT have me eager to update my W98SE machine to another OS other than the opportunity to add to Bill Gates' billions. (So far, Vista seems to be a real yawner, requiring more hardware upgrades than are reasonable for my day-to-day computer use.)

o I have Nero 6.xx on this WIN98SE machine and it does, indeed, work just fine, as was mentioned. However, Nero 7x has features that 6.6x doesn't have (presets for iPod, ability to boost volume in Nero Recode, others).

o I have used Nero 7x on a friend's XP machine and like those extra options, even in light of the "bloatware" charge. I could gamble and try Nero 7x on the W98SE machine, but that would require removing Nero 6.xx (which has all the updates and works just fine), a risk I'm hesitant to take.

o Asking Nero, others: Here on Videohelp.com I've found a lot better "real world" answers from "real world" users. In addition, previous inquiries to Nero support went unanswered or, at best, the answers were not appropriate for the questions asked.

That's why someone "would want to do this."

  7. You do realize you don't need to re-install Nero 6 from the original CD. Just write down the serial # and use the last update file to install.

  8. Thanks for the reminder. Yes, I understand that I shouldn't have to resort to the original CD--in theory.

However, I had a problem with reinstalling from a "last update" file one time that took me a looooong time to resolve. I don't know if it was something I did, but I'm very leery of taking the chance of having to go through the hassle again.

That's why I asked the original question.
