Hi, does anyone know if Adobe Encore DVD 1.5 can author DVD that is higher than 720x480? I have a HDTV and would like to view the DVD in widescreen mode and in HD. I have created an avi files from high resolution stills (6Mpix) in Adobe premiere pro 1.5 using 1080i settings. But I couldn't import the avi file in Encore because it's not 720x480. Is there a way to do it in Encore 1.5? If not, is Encore DVD 2.0 capable of doing that? If not, what other software would allow me to do that? Thank you in advance.

DVD authoring software only allows for authoring to DVD compliance. The maximum resolution for DVD is 720 x 490 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL). If you want to author a DVD, you have to meet these specs.

If you want to author in HD resolutions (1080i, for example) then you need to look at HD-DVD or BluRay authoring tools. However these will not play in a standard DVD player.

Thanks gus1inger. But, what about the regular movie DVDs that can be viewed in widescreen and 1080i? They play on the normal DVD players, and don't need HD-DVD, isn't it?

The player (in some cases) or the TV upscale them to HDTV resolution. The movie on the disc is still 720 x 480 or 720 x 576. They do not have HD content.

Thanks. I just find that some of my highres(2816x2112) stills in my slideshow DVD were not all that clear. I used the same DVD player that played the normal movie DVDs, so if the player did the upconvert, then it should've upconverted the slideshow as well.
I also find it odd that Adobe premiere provided a HDV plugin in Premiere Pro 1.5 to create 1080i projects, but does not allow Encore DVD to author a 1080i DVD project. Oh well, I guess it's just the way it is. Thanks.

Your hires stills were reduced to 720x480 on the DVD (that's the highest resolution allowable for NTSC DVD). No upscaling player will ever restore any of the detail that was lost. At best the 720x480 image will be sharpened a bit when upscaled.

Maybe that's why it's called Encore DVD, not Encore HD DVD!
